Colorectal cancer is one of the neoplasms most suitable for preventive measures, especially screening. Several cost-effective screening strategies are available: detection of fecal occult bleeding through chemical (guaiac tests) or immunological tests and endoscopic procedures such as flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. This article reviews the most important studies on colorectal cancer screening presented at the annual congress of the American Gastroenterological Association, held in San Diego in May 2012, with special emphasis on its effectiveness in reducing the incidence and/or mortality associated with this neoplasm.

[Microalbuminuria and renal insufficiency in chronic hepatitis C virus infection].
Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with glomerular disease, which is manifested by proteinuria with or without renal dysfunction. ⋯ HCV-positive patients show a high prevalence of microalbuminuria and renal insufficiency compared with HCV-negative individuals. The risk of HCV-associated renal insufficiency is independent of the presence of other predisposing factors such hypertension and diabetes.

Case Reports[Metastatic Crohn's disease. Response to adalimumab dose intensification].
Inflammatory bowel disease is accompanied by extraintestinal manifestations in a high percentage of patients. Cutaneous lesions are the second most prevalent of these manifestations, and within these, metastatic Crohn's disease is one of the least common, being the least frequent specific cutaneous manifestation of Crohn's disease. This entity includes cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions with a non-caseating granulomatous appearance on histological analysis identical to that of Crohn's disease. ⋯ We report the case of a female patient with longstanding and complex Crohn's disease who developed metastatic cutaneous manifestations while receiving adalimumab. The cutaneous manifestations responded well to dose intensification of this drug. A review of the literature is provided.

Case Reports[Pleural effusion secondary to pancreaticopleural fistula following acute pancreatitis].
Pancreaticopleural fistula is a rare complication of acute or chronic pancreatitis, requiring medical (somatostatin), endoscopic or surgical treatment, with medical treatment being the first option. We describe the case of a 64-year-old man who showed complete disruption of Wirsung's duct that was diagnosed through ultrasound endoscopy and was complicated by the development of a subphrenic collection, diaphragm perforation and subsequent empyema. Medical therapy was attempted without success, and anatomical restoration of the duct was achieved after endoscopic treatment. The patient also required surgery to evacuate the pleural collection.
