Case ReportsComputed tomography findings in fatal cases of enormous hepatic portal venous gas.
To assess the computed tomography (CT) findings in the patients with hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) who presented with a short fatal clinical course in our hospital in order to demonstrate if there was any sign for prediction. ⋯ HPVG is a diagnostic clue in patients with acute abdominal conditions, and CT is the most specific diagnostic tool for its evaluation. The dry mesenteric veins are the suggestive fatal sign, especially for the deteriorating patients, with the direct effect on gastrointestinal perfusion.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of water-soluble contrast in colorectal surgery: a prospective randomized trial.
Postoperative gastrointestinal-tract motility is normally delayed. Early feeding after colorectal surgery has been reported recently, but late feeding is common. Gastrografin not only enhances bowel peristalsis, but also decreases bowel-wall edema. Whether contrast medium allows early oral feeding and reduces the duration of hospitalization requires clarification. ⋯ Gastrografin not only allowed early oral feeding but also reduced the duration of hospitalization after elective colorectal surgery.

Dextrose in the banked blood products does not seem to affect the blood glucose levels in patients undergoing liver transplantation.
Hyperglycemia commonly seen in liver transplantation (LT) has often been attributed to the dextrose in the storage solution of blood transfusion products. The purpose of the study is to compare the changes of the blood glucose levels in transfused and non-transfused patients during LT. ⋯ We conclude that blood transfusion does not cause significant changes in the blood glucose levels in this study.

Clinical and dosimetric factors of radiation-induced esophageal injury: radiation-induced esophageal toxicity.
To analyze the clinical and dosimetric predictive factors for radiation-induced esophageal injury in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) during three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT). ⋯ Concurrent chemotherapy and the maximal esophageal point dose > or =60 Gy are significantly associated with the risk of grade 3-5 esophageal injury in patients with NSCLC treated with 3D-CRT.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEfficacy of omeprazole and amoxicillin with either clarithromycin or metronidazole on eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Chinese peptic ulcer patients.
One-week triple therapy with proton pump inhibitors, clarithromycin and amoxicillin has recently been proposed as the first-line treatment for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection; however, data regarding the effects of this regimen in China are scarce. The aim of this prospective and randomized study was to compare the efficacy of clarithromycin and metronidazole when they were combined with omeprazole and amoxicillin on eradication of H. pylori and ulcer healing in Chinese peptic ulcer patients. ⋯ One-week triple therapy with omeprazole and amoxicillin in combination with either clarithromycin or metronidazole is effective for the eradication of H. pylori. The therapeutic regimen comprising metronidazole with low cost, good compliance and mild adverse events may offer a good choice for the treatment of peptic ulcers associated with H. pylori infection in China.
