Activity-dependent structural plasticity of dendritic spines of pyramidal neurons in the central neuron system has been proposed to be a cellular basis of learning and memory. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is accompanied by changes in synaptic morphology and structural remodeling of dendritic spines. However, there is considerable uncertainty as to the nature of the adjustment. ⋯ Two paired-pulse low-frequency stimulation (PP-LFS) episodes to Schaffer collateral-commissural fibers induced long-term depression (LTD), and did not affect p-cofilin expression in the stratum radiatum of the hippocampal CA1 area. These results suggest that LTP induction is associated with altered actin filament assembly. Moreover, the CA1 and subiculum areas of the hippocampal formation possibly cooperate with each other in important physiological functions, such as learning and memory, or in pathological diseases, such as epilepsy.

Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
An open-label, multicentre study of levocetirizine for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and urticaria in Taiwanese patients.
Levocetirizine has been shown in observational studies in the west as an effective and satisfactory therapy for patients with allergic respiratory and skin disease. An open-label, multicentre observational study was conducted to investigate the patients' perception of levocetirizine in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) and urticaria in Taiwanese patients. Three hundred and thirty-three patients (236 AR and 97 urticaria patients) attending out-patient clinics of medical centres across Taiwan were included in the study. ⋯ Overall, 50-74% of all patients perceived improvements in quality of sleep/daily activities and 50-65% of the patients rated the onset of action for levocetirizine as very rapid or rapid. Somnolence was the most common AE, reported by 7.4% of AR and 7.0% of urticaria patients. The results of this study indicated that levocetirizine is an effective and satisfactory therapy for the management of allergic respiratory and skin disease in Taiwanese subjects.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the most devastating form of acute lung injury (ALI) or pulmonary edema (PE). We presented the experimental studies and clinical investigations of two serious forms of ALI. Drastic and severe PE could be induced by intracranial hypertension or cerebral compression (CC). ⋯ The alveolar macrophages are the major source of iNOS. Later study also found that neutrophil elastase and myeloperoxidase were elevated following fat embolism. N-acetylcysteine (an antioxidant), and NOS inhibitors such as Nomega nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), S-methylisothiourea (SMT) or L-N6 (1-iminoethyl)-lysine (L-Nil) were able to abrogate the FES or the fat embolism-induced changes.

Acid aspiration or intrapulmonary instillation of gastric particles causes lung inflammation leading to acute lung injury (ALI). Hypercapnia exerts different effects on ALI caused by various insults. The effects of hypercapnia on lung inflammation and injury due to acid aspiration are yet to be determined. ⋯ Intratracheal instillation of GP in normal or low pH PSS causes ALI accompanied with biochemical changes. The release of nitric oxide via iNOS isoform is detrimental to the lung. Hypercapnia tended to enhance ALI and associated changes induced by gastric acid instillation.

The present study was conducted to assess the effects of whole body cooling on multiorgan dysfunction that occurred during heatstroke in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: [1] the normal control, [2] diabetic control, [3] diabetic heatstroke, and [4] diabetic heatstroke-whole body cooling (WBC). They were exposed to ambient temperature of 43 degrees C for exactly 58 min to induce heatstroke. ⋯ The cerebrovascular, renal, and hepatic dysfunction, the increased levels of nitric oxide metabolites, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and dihydroxybenzoic acid in the serum during heatstroke were significantly reduced by WBC. Although the serum interleukin-10 maintained at a negligible levels before heat stress, they were significantly elevated by WBC in diabetic-heatstroke rats. The data demonstrate that heatstroke-induced multiorgan dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats can be decreased by WBC.
