Patient aggression is a common source of occupational violence in emergency departments. Staff attitudes regarding the causes for aggression influence the way they manage it. The Management of Clinical Aggression - Rapid Emergency Department Intervention is a 45 min educational program that aims to promote the use of de-escalation techniques and effective communication skills to prevent patient aggression. ⋯ There was limited evidence to demonstrate that the program significantly modified staff attitudes towards the prevention of patient aggression using the Management of Aggression and Violence Attitude Scale. Additional survey items that specifically measure staff attitudes about the use of restraint in emergency settings are needed to better understand decision making about restraining practices. Further work is indicated to quantify the impact of training in practice.

In case management an individual or small team is responsible for navigating the patient through complex care. Characteristics of case management within and throughout different target groups and settings vary widely. Case management is relatively new in palliative care. Insight into the content of care and organisational characteristics of case management in palliative care is needed. ⋯ In the Netherlands, case management in palliative care is new. Several models of delivery were identified. Research is needed to gain insight into the best way to deliver case management. By describing characteristics of case management in palliative care, an important first step is made in identifying effective elements of case management.

Given the severe shortage of nurses in geriatric care in Israel and the planned expansion of their role in the care of older people, the Israel Ministry of Health's Nursing Division decided to investigate the readiness of current students to work in geriatrics. ⋯ The non-influence of training programme content/design is the key finding. The chief recruitment effort should be invested in making the domain of geriatric nursing more attractive to nurses by improving its pay structure and expanding the powers of geriatric nurses to the level of Clinical Nurse Specialist, which would provide an attractive promotion track.

Person-centred care has been identified as the ideal approach to caring for people with dementia. Developed in relation to long stay settings, there are challenges to its implementation in acute settings. However, international policy indicates that acute care for people with dementia should be informed by the principles of person-centred care and interventions should be designed to sustain their personhood. ⋯ There is a need for the concept of person-centred care to be valued at the level of both the individual and the organisation/team for people with dementia to have appropriate care in acute settings.
