The Mamil (middle-aged man in Lycra) appears to be an emergent cycling-focused species. ⋯ Mamils in Australia are socially graded, and also grade themselves according to bicycle-related expenditure and hill gradients overcome. They often form cohesive and supportive groups, but may not reflect a population-wide social movement to increase physical activity among adult Australians.

We also devised a study of our most festive seasonal poisoning, to demonstrate how hard we are working while everyone else is partying. ⋯ This epidemic of poisoning is perhaps due to mass seasonal synaesthesia. The lack of any significant adverse consequences highlights the contribution that 50 years of injury prevention has made to everyone having a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
