Bortezomib is a mainstay of therapy for multiple myeloma, frequently complicated by painful neuropathy. The objective of this study was to describe clinical, electrophysiological, and pathological changes of bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy (BiPN) in detail and to correlate pathological changes with pain descriptors. Clinical data, nerve conduction studies, and lower leg skin biopsies were collected from 22 BiPN patients. ⋯ Finally, significant correlations between UDNFD of PGP9.5 versus the evaluative Pain Rating Index (PRI) and number of words count (NWC) of the MPQ, and significant inverse correlations between SENFD/UDNFD of CGRP versus the sensory-discriminative MPQ PRI/NWC were found. BiPN is a sensory neuropathy, in which neuropathic pain is the most striking clinical finding. Bortezomib-induced neuropathic pain may be driven by sprouting of parasympathetic fibers in the upper dermis and impaired regeneration of CGRP fibers in the subepidermal layer.

Objective Pain catastrophizing is linked to many aspects of pain perception and defines a unique dimension in predicting pain intensity and physical disability. Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) is an effective, validated,self-report measure, commonly used in clinical trials. Here, we present a Simplified Chinese PCS (SC-PCS) version developed in Chinese patients suffering from chronic pain. ⋯ However, a confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the three-factor model had the best goodness-fitting. Conclusions We demonstrate the successful translational adaptation from English to Simplified Chinese as well as the reliability and validity of SC-PCS. An important discovery was education level significantly correlated with SC-PCS, identifying a future consideration for other cross-cultural development of self-reported measures.

Acupuncture at pericardium 6 (PC6) shows a consistently positive efficacy in nausea response suggested by consensus expert guidelines. Nausea encompasses aversive symptom as well as strong emotional components. Disgust is a subjective emotion of uneasy commonly accompanying with a physiological response that is accompanied by strong visceral sensations (e.g., nausea). ⋯ We also found evidence for radical reorganizations of local stronger casual interaction patterns to disgust-induced brain responses targeted by acupuncture at different acupoints. This study provided the brain substrate for acupuncture on aversion modulation. The coupling between the cerebellum (nodulus) and insula supported interoception system and vestibular control which provided the specific neural basis.

The Asian Pain Symposium (APS) is a main pain research meeting in Asia. Since established in 2000 in Kyoto, five other APSs have been held in different Asian regions including Seoul of Korea in 2004, Fukuoka of Japan in 2008, Shanghai of China in 2011, Okazaki of Japan in 2013, and Suzhou of China in 2015. The 7th Asian Pain Symposium (APS 2017) was held in Taipei of Taiwan during October 26th to October 29th, 2017. ⋯ A council meeting was held during the 7th APS, and at this council meeting Dr. Seog Bae OH (Seoul National University) was elected as the president of 8th Asian Pain Symposium to organize the next symposium in Seoul, Korea in 2019. In order to keep a permanent record and to help promote pain research in Asia, we have collected abstracts of oral presentations and posted them below in the order when the presentations were given at the 7th Asian Pain Symposium.

Protein kinase M ζ is well known for its role in maintaining memory and pain. Previously, we revealed that the activation of protein kinase M ζ in the anterior cingulate cortex plays a role in sustaining neuropathic pain. ⋯ We also reveal that the inhibition of protein kinase M ζ through zeta inhibitory peptide treatment is enough to reduce mechanical allodynia responses in mice with one-month-old nerve injuries. However, the zeta inhibitory peptide treatment was only effective for a limited time.
