Interleukin-17A (IL-17A), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. A number of studies have investigated the relationship between IL-17A rs2275913 polymorphism and risk of asthma. However, the results obtained are inconclusive. The aim of this meta-analysis is to clarify the relationship between IL-17A rs2275913 polymorphism and asthma risk. ⋯ The results of this meta-analysis indicate that the G allele of rs2275913 in IL-17A is a protective factor for the development of asthma.

The association of mannose-binding lectin gene (MBL2) polymorphisms with tuberculosis susceptibility was inconclusive. In this study, a meta-analysis of 22 case-control studies was carried out to assess the effect of MBL2 polymorphisms on tuberculosis risk. ⋯ The MBL2 rs1800451 polymorphism is associated with decreased TB risk in the general population, and A/O, rs7096206, rs1800450 and rs1800451 are likely to be associated with the risk for some specific ethnic groups.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children (aged 5-12 years) and adolescents (aged 12-19 years) in Asian countries. Study design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ In view of the number of children who are overweight or obese, the associated detrimental effects on health, and the cost to health-care systems, implementation of programmes to monitor and prevent unhealthy weight gain in children and adolescents is needed throughout Asian countries.

In developed countries, malignant tumours are the second most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. The estimates made by epidemiologists indicate that the incidence and death rate for malignant tumours all over the world, Poland included, will probably grow in the decades to come, specifically among patients who are over 65. The aim of the study was to evaluate how local government units address the health needs of citizens on the basis of an analysis of health policy programmes concerning malignant tumours completed in Poland in 2009-2014. ⋯ There is a very high degree of differentiation in the involvement of particular voivodeships in fighting cancer regarding the number of implemented health programmes. There are various degrees of involvement of particular types of local government units in the implementation of programmes in the field of cancer. The repeatability of actions undertaken at the local and national level may indicate limited effectiveness of the policy to fight cancer. It is necessary to implement more programmes in the field of oncological diseases and to increase the population covered by these programmes.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. The membrane glycoprotein CD200, widely expressed on multiple cells/tissues, uses a structurally similar receptor (CD200R), delivering immunoregulatory signals. There is evidence that CD200/CD200R signaling suppresses anti-tumor responses in different types of malignancies. Little is known about the CD200/CD200R pathway in GC. The aim of the study was to evaluate the frequencies of CD200+ and CD200R+ lymphocytes in patients with GC. ⋯ For GC pathogenesis, deregulation of the CD200/CD200R axis is important. High percentages of lymphocytes with CD200 expression may contribute to the continuous T cell activation and development of chronic inflammation and influence gastric carcinogenesis.
