Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease causing symmetric polyarthritis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of infliximab (INF) and methotrexate (MTX) on apoptosis, oxidative stress, and calcium signaling in the neutrophils of RA patients. ⋯ Our results suggest that INF and MTX are useful antagonists in apoptosis and mitochondrial oxidative stress in the neutrophils of RA patients. INF and MTX decreased the Ca2+ concentration through inhibition of the TRPM2 channel in the neutrophils of RA patients. It may be a new pathway in the mechanisms of anti-rheumatic drugs.

The exfoliation of exfoliative cells from gastric serosa into the peritoneum is the main cause of peritoneal metastasis, which is the most common form of postoperative recurrence in gastric cancer. This study investigates the effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the biological properties of gastric cancer cells. ⋯ Lower survival was related to positive exfoliative cytology, lymphatic node metastasis, serosa-infiltrated and poorly differentiated gastric cancer. The expression of VEGF and EGF was correlated with the properties of gastric cancer cells. Specific inhibition of VEGF and EGF may impair the biological properties of gastric cancer cells in vitro.

Mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a serious clinical condition. There were a lot of experimental studies performed in the treatment of I/R injury. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental study with effects of sesamin on I/R injury model. We aimed to investigate the protective effect of sesamin on mesenteric I/R injury model. ⋯ Sesamin helps to protect the intestinal tissue at the cellular level by reducing the oxidative stress and inflammation at both the plasma and tissue levels in the experimental I/R model.

Antitumor and apoptotic effects of 5-methoxypsoralen in U87MG human glioma cells and its effect on cell cycle, autophagy and PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
The main purpose of the current study was to investigate the antitumor effects of 5-methoxypsoralen in U87MG human glioma cells along with studying its effects on cell cycle progression, autophagy and the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. ⋯ In brief, the results indicate that 5-methoxypsoralen exerted potent anticancer and apoptotic effects in U-87MG human glioma cells along with inducing cell cycle arrest, autophagy and m-TOR/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway inhibition.
