The approximately three times higher rate of migraine prevalence in women than men may result from the mitochondrial transmission of this disease. Studies with imaging techniques suggest disturbances in mitochondrial metabolism in specific regions of the brain in migraine patients. Migraine shares some clinical features with several mitochondrial diseases and many other disorders include migraine headaches. ⋯ Micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long-noncoding RNA (lncRNAs) have been detected in mitochondria. The regulation of the miRNA-lncRNA axis can be important for mitochondrial physiology and its impairment can result in a disease phenotype. Further studies on the role of mitochondrial epigenetic modifications in migraine are needed, but they require new methods and approaches.

More than 5% of the world population lives with a hearing impairment. The main factors responsible for hearing degeneration are ototoxic drugs, aging, continued exposure to excessive noise and infections. The pool of adult stem cells in the inner ear drops dramatically after birth, and therefore an endogenous cellular source for regeneration is absent. ⋯ In this review, we will focus on reporting the state of the art in the regenerative medicine field for hearing recovery. Stem cell research has enabled remarkable advances in regeneration, particularly in neuronal cells and synapses. Despite the progress achieved, there are certain issues that need a deeper development to improve the results already obtained, or to develop new approaches aiming for the clinical application.

Liver cancer is one of the most common malignancies across the globe and one of the major causes of cancer-related mortality. With limited available treatment options, there is an urgent need to look for new available options. Genistein is an important plant flavonoid and has been shown to possess tremendous pharmacological potential. The objective of the present study was therefore to evaluate the anticancer effect of the genistein. ⋯ We propose that genistein exhibits significant anticancer activity against liver cancer and therefore may prove beneficial in the management of liver cancer.

Chemotherapy-induced hepatotoxicity in cancer patients often results in cessation of therapy and prevents completion of the treatment plan. The entire pathological description and comparison of hepatic damage induced by oxaliplatin or cisplatin in combination with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is not adequately reported. This study reports histopathological assessment of hepatotoxicity of a non-tumor bearing organ in rats treated with 5-FU, oxaliplatin and cisplatin (CDDP). ⋯ Oxaliplatin-associated cystic lesions were intensified in rats treated with a combination of 5-FU and oxaliplatin.

Oridonin, which is isolated from the Chinese herb Rabdosia rubescens, has been reported to exhibit an anti-tumorous effect on different cancers. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanism by which oridonin suppresses human ovarian cancer. ⋯ These results suggested that oridonin suppressed the mTOR signaling pathway, up-regulated the FOXP3 level, and inhibited metastasis of human ovarian cancer cells.
