This study aimed to explore the biological functions of AKAP12 in lung adenocarcinoma and investigate the interaction between AKAP12 and miR-338-3p. ⋯ AKAP12 acts as a tumor promoter in lung adenocarcinoma development. Upregulation of MiR-338-3p could suppress AKAP12 expression in lung cancer cells and contribute to a better prognosis.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have gained increased attention due to the discovery of their roles in cancer-related processes. LncRNA PTCSC3 has been shown to have tumour-suppressive effects in thyroid cancer and glioblastoma. This study investigated the role of lncRNA PTSC3 in human oral cancer. ⋯ Overall, the evidence suggests that lncRNA PTCSC3 acts as a tumour suppressor in human oral cancer and suppresses oral cancer proliferation via induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

Despite intensive research and a long history of glucocorticoids being applied in various clinical areas, they still generate a challenge for personalized medicine by causing resistance or dependence in nearly 50% of patients treated. The objective of the present study was to determine the genetic predictors of variable reactions in inflammatory bowel disease patients to glucocorticoid therapy. Therefore, based on the current knowledge on how glucocorticoids act, we have compiled a panel of 21 genes for variant analysis: NR3C1, NLRP1, IPO13, FKBP5, HSPA4, ABCB1, STIP1, HSP90AA1, IL-1A, IL-1B, IL-2, IL-4, CXCL8, IL-10, NFKBIA, JUN, MIF, TNF, MAPK14, CYP3A4, and CYP3A5. ⋯ Among the 21 analyzed genes, four (NR3C1, FKBP5, MAPK14, and ABCB1) revealed a significant impact on the glucocorticoid treatment response, which could result in valuable pharmacogenetic biomarkers after being confirmed in other populations and in functional studies.

The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was designed to measure the vision-related quality of life (QoL). We aimed to assess the effect of disease duration, disease type (i.e., acute vs. chronic and unilateral vs. bilateral), and selected sociodemographic data on the QoL of patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). ⋯ Patients with CSC do not assess their QoL in negative terms, which may be related to the fact that the disease presents with transient symptoms. However, the QoL deteriorated with longer disease duration. Men with CSC have better vision-related QoL than women.

The aim of this study was to assess the relations between plasma renin activity (PRA), serum aldosterone concentration (ALDO) and selected asymptomatic organ damage (AOD) indices in mild primary arterial hypertension (AH). ⋯ Assessment of the influence of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) on AOD should include the relationship between renin and aldosterone. The PRA itself has no predictive value for AOD. More advanced arterial stiffness and renal impairment are associated with increased PRA and ARR. The RAAS activity might be useful in AOD prediction and hypertension severity assessment.
