Even though incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (RLNP) is low, it affects importantly the quality of life of patients and remains one of main medicolegal litigation problems in surgery. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) has become widely accepted tool helping in recurrent laryngeal nerve identification, however no clear association of IONM with RLNP rate has been demonstrated. The aim of our study was to assess whether training in IONM influences rates of RNLP after thyroid surgery as an independent factor. ⋯ According to our study training in IONM decreases chances of RLNP especially during total or near total thyroidectomy.

The inactivation of both alleles of the ATM gene leads to ataxia-telangiectasia syndrome, whereas carriers of monoallelic mutations in the ATM gene are associated with increased risk of different types of cancer. Three substitutions in the ATM gene (c.6095G>A, c.7630-2A>C, c.5932G>T) are the most common mutations causing ataxia-telangiectasia among Polish patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether these ATM mutations are associated with increased risk of tobacco-related cancers. ⋯ The results indicate that the studied ATM variants do not seem to be associated with tobacco-related cancers in Poland.

Ultrasound-guided thrombin injection (UGTI) is the preferred treatment of pseudoaneurysms (psA). The potential risk of complications increases with the number of UGTI treatments needed for complete psA obliteration. Identification of risk factors for recurrent psA is needed. ⋯ The LEVI and time interval between artery cannulation and UGTI treatment are strong parameters identifying patients at risk of psA recurrence. The psA volume and communicating channel length are less substantial risks, but still significant. Concomitant antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy do not affect the success rate of UGTI.

Previous studies have reported that miR-520b exhibited inhibitory effects on various human tumors, whereas the effects of miR-520b on gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) have remained unclear. To investigate the effects of miR-520b on GBC progression and reveal the underlying mechanisms, this study was performed. ⋯ MiR-520b had suppressive effects on GBC via targeting RAB22A in vitro.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small noncoding RNA molecules involved in modulation of cancer progression. Here, we investigated the possible role of miR-144 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) development. ⋯ miR-144 could inhibit the migration, invasion and secretion of IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-8 through downregulation of TLR2 expression in A549 cells.
