Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer in men, with a steadily rising incidence, affecting on average one in six men during their lifetime. The increase in morbidity is related to the increasing overall life expectancy, prostate-specific antigen testing, implementation of new molecular markers for cancer detection and the more frequent application of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging. ⋯ As a matter of fact, AS has been adopted by many institutions as a safe and effective management strategy. The aim of our review is to summarize the contemporary data on AS in patients affected with PCa with the intention to present the most clinically useful and pertinent AS protocols.

Ischemic preconditioning (Ipre) provides protection against renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury with its associated remote organ damage. This study examined the enhancing protective effect of Ipre with levosimendan or cilostazol in I/R-induced kidney and lung injury in a rat model. ⋯ Cilostazol or levosimendan potentiates the renoprotective effect of Ipre against renal I/R injury, associated with upregulation of antioxidant genes Nrf2, HO-1, and NOQ-1 expression.

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders. Recent findings have shown that the apoptotic program and autophagy are related to hearing loss. The aim of the study was to explore the effects of noise and cisplatin exposure on apoptosis and autophagy in the hair cells of the cochleae. ⋯ Our findings demonstrated for the first time that noise and cisplatin exposure promoted apoptosis and autophagy in the hair cells of the cochleae. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms of noise- or cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that have a beneficial effect on health by exhibiting quantitative and qualitative effects on intestinal microflora and/or modification of the immune system. A strain is considered probiotic if it demonstrates a series of clinically proven health benefits. ⋯ The incorrect or inefficient antioxidant mechanisms results in oxidative stress and may occur in the course of many diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease or damage to the heart, brain or transplanted organs. Correct functioning of antioxidant mechanisms seems to be crucial for the proper functioning of our body; therefore, probiotics should be carefully investigated for potential antioxidant properties.

The study aimed to investigate how pain severity in the shoulder region affects balance ability, postural stability and fall risk. ⋯ The results indicated that shoulder pain severity affects balance parameters. As pain level at rest increases, postural sway increases in a medio-lateral direction, and towards the left while standing on the right foot. Approaches regarding increasing balance and postural instability should be included in physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs of patients with shoulder pain at an early phase to protect patients from balance problems and fall risk.
