Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumour occurring in the head and neck region. It is now understood that (human papillomavirus (HPV)- positive and HPV-negative diseases are two very different clinical entities associated with different outcomes. We decided to assess p16 expression status in patients with oropharyngeal cancer and retrospectively evaluate the outcomes of the treatment. ⋯ Our data show that HPV infection is a predictor of better disease-free and overall survival in patients with oropharyngeal cancer. For HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer patients weekly given cisplatin with concurrent radiotherapy can be an alternative to three weekly given cisplatin considering effectiveness and early toxicity.

It is known that the quality and quantity of milk is directly related to the dietary habits of the mother. Despite that, the rates of maternal malnutrition during lactation are increasing in several countries; thus, observing its effects on the offspring is relevant. The present study aims to verify the effects of maternal malnutrition during breastfeeding on the skulls of adult-aged Wistar rats. ⋯ Maternal malnutrition during the lactation period caused long-term effects in skull morphology of Wistar rats. These effects could not be reversed after regulation of the diet.

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the efficacy of arthroscopic repair in patients with full thickness, isolated subscapularis tendon tears (I-STTs) or combined subscapularis tendon tears (C-STTs) involving the rotator cuff tendons was evaluated. Second, the outcomes between these two groups were compared. The influence of age and gender on the cohort clinical outcomes was also analysed. Our hypothesis was that satisfactory functional results could be obtained arthroscopically in both groups without any influence of age or gender. ⋯ Arthroscopic repair of STTs provided functional restoration, pain relief and patient satisfaction in both groups. Age and gender did not affect the clinical outcomes achieved by arthroscopic STT repair.

The aim of our study was to assess antimicrobial peptides in children with Crohn's disease (CD). ⋯ Assessing antimicrobial peptides may be helpful in estimating of phenotype and location of CD lesions.

Vascular malformations are present in a great variety of congenital syndromes, either as the predominant or additional feature. They pose a major challenge to the clinician: due to significant phenotype overlap, a precise diagnosis is often difficult to obtain, some of the malformations carry a risk of life threatening complications and, for many entities, treatment is not well established. To facilitate their recognition and aid in differentiation, we present a selection of notable congenital disorders of vascular system development, distinguishing between the heritable germinal and sporadic somatic mutations as their causes. Clinical features, genetic background and comprehensible description of molecular mechanisms is provided for each entity.
