MicroRNA-125b has been found to be down-regulated in many types of malignant tumours and diseases with excessive proliferation of keratinocytes, such as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and psoriasis. Cholesteatoma, which is mainly composed of keratinocytes, also has characteristics of abnormal proliferation similar to a malignant tumour. However, the expression and regulatory mechanisms of miR-125b and its downstream genes in cholesteatoma have not been clarified. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrate that miR-125b can influence the growth of cholesteatoma by targeting STAT3 and its downstream genes, including cyclin D1, survivin, and VEGF, thus providing an opportunity to establish new medical therapy strategies and facilitating further study of the pathogenesis of cholesteatoma.

Childhood overweight and obesity have become a global problem in the past three decades. There are very few studies which examine the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the development of otorhinolaryngological diseases in children. The objective of the study was to determine the association between overweight or obesity in children and the occurrence of otorhinolaryngological diseases. ⋯ The development and introduction of preventive programs like "Let's Get the Kids Moving" in the future will contribute to building a healthier society. The study findings suggest that primal prevention may lead to a decrease in the development of otorhinolaryngological diseases. We also showed that higher body mass correlates with higher prevalence of otorhinolaryngological diseases. Further studies are needed to establish the etiopathology of this association.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an important complication of diabetes, which is the leading cause of ESRD worldwide. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of all-cause mortality in patients with ESRD with diagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM) and no diagnosed DM. ⋯ The occurrence of diabetes in patients with ESRD significantly increases the risk of death compared to patients with ESRD without diabetes.

Recently introduced microUSB ultrasound probe, which can be connected to personal mobile device constitutes a new class of diagnostic pocket size imaging devices (PSID).The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and clinical utility of real-time tele-echocardiography with the use such device. ⋯ Pocket size imaging devices allows an inexperienced operator to perform a focused echocardiographic examination under a remote supervision of an experienced cardiologist. The introduction of new technology in the form of PSID with tele-echocardiography feature can revolutionize access to this imaging technique.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease which presents with an earlier age of onset and increased symptom severity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between regulation of miRNAs and AD. ⋯ Comprehensive analysis of all miRNA studies reveals cooperation in miRNA signatures whether in brain tissues or in CSF and peripheral blood. More and more studies suggest that miRNAs may play crucial roles as diagnostic biomarkers and/or as new therapeutic targets in AD. According to biomarkers, we can identify the preclinical phase early, which provides an important time window for therapeutic intervention.
