The present study aimed to investigate the differences in the proteomic expression between uncomplicated parapneumonic pleural effusion (UPPE) and complicated parapneumonic pleural effusion (CPPE). ⋯ In pleural effusion in patients with CPPE, there are enhanced expressions of proteins concerning glucose and amino acid metabolism, NADH regeneration, and HIF-1 signalling pathways together with decreased expressions of proteins concerning protein polymerization, blood coagulation, platelet activation, and complement activation.

Multiple myeloma is the third most common blood cancer in Europe and accounts for approx. 10-15% of these cancers. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence, prevalence, mortality and survival in multiple myeloma (ICD code: C90.0) patients in Poland in the years 2008-2017. ⋯ The incidence and prevalence of multiple myeloma and survival rates in Poland were continuously increasing in the studied period. These trends may result from the aging of Polish society, better recognisability of multiple myeloma and/or improved access to increasingly more effective therapies in Poland. The impact of these factors on the epidemiology of multiple myeloma requires further studies.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) alters the integrity of the spinal cord, which leads to loss of multiple organs' function including locomotor function. The present study evaluates the protective effect of tabersonine against SCI. ⋯ Data of the investigation suggest that tabersonine protects against spinal cord injury by activating CREB and reducing NLRP3/Notch signaling.

Infant jaundice is a common condition which results from a high concentration of serum bilirubin. Phototherapy is a widely used treatment for bilirubin clearance. We analyzed the effect of phototherapy on intestinal flora and metabolism of newborns. The aim was to assess the benefit of treatment for hyperbilirubinemia with phototherapy. ⋯ This study identified several differential intestinal microbial species and secondary bile acids in fecal samples from infants with jaundice before and after phototherapy. Phototherapy can change the flora and its metabolism and its long-term impact needs further observation.

This study aimed to evaluate the possible role of urolithin A (UA) and urolithin B (UB) on the mRNA expression levels of LDL receptor (LDLR) and PSCK9 genes, and also of the uptake of LDL particles in HepG2 cells. ⋯ The present results suggest that UA was more effective than UB in promoting LDL uptake as well as cell surface LDLR in HepG2 cells. This effect seems to be mostly mediated through the suppression of PCSK9 expression but not the induction of LDLR expression.
