Leptin is a pro-inflammatory adipocytokine implicated in cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, obesity and chronic kidney disease. ⋯ Our results show that both leptin plasma concentrations and polymorphisms in the LEPR gene may affect clinical outcomes in renal transplant recipients, suggesting that the determination of these parameters could be useful in predicting post-transplant adverse events.

The present study concerns a connection of the Q192RPON1 polymorphism with atherosclerosis requiring percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in the Polish population. ⋯ The presence of the 192RR genotype and 192R allele are indicative of at least a two-fold increased risk of atherosclerosis requiring PCI or CABG in the Polish population.

Resveratrol, a polyphenol extracted from many plant species, has emerged as a promising pro-apoptotic agent in various cancer cells. However, the role of resveratrol in cell proliferation and apoptosis of fibroblast-like synoviocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA-FLS) is not fully understood. The study was aimed at elucidating the role of resveratrol in cell proliferation and apoptosis of RA-FLS and the underlying molecular mechanism. ⋯ Our preliminary study indicated that resveratrol may suppress RA-FLS cell survival and promote apoptosis at least partly through regulation of autophagy and the AKT-p53 axis.

Airway infections represent one of the most common causes of mortality worldwide. The authors sought to describe patients hospitalized for lung and mediastinum abscesses in Poland from 2009 to 2016. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first evaluation of the disease in Poland. ⋯ Presented recent data on lung and mediastinum abscesses in Poland may be helpful in comparative analyses among European countries.

The purpose of this study was to explore the regulatory mechanisms of FGF2 in carotid atherosclerotic plaque development using bioinformatics analysis. ⋯ CNN1 might cooperate with FGF2 to regulate smooth muscle contractility during CAP formation. VAV3 might cooperate with FGF2 to be responsible for the development of CAP through participating in platelet activation. Hsa-miR-15a-5p and hsa-miR-16-5p might participate in the development of CAP via regulating FGF2.
