Iodine deficiency is a global issue; however, no comparable assessments of the burden of iodine deficiency have been conducted worldwide. Hence, we measured the estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) from 1990 to 2019. Our aim was to quantify the geographic differences in the burden of iodine deficiency worldwide. ⋯ Between 1990 and 2019, there was a decline in the global ASI and DALY rates of iodine deficiency. However, East Asia, the Philippines, Pakistan and Nepal exhibited the largest increases in the ASI rates of iodine deficiency, demonstrating their significant burden of iodine insufficiency. These regions must therefore be targeted for intervention.

In this study, we investigated the clinical value of using urothelial cancer-associated 1 (UCA1) and microRNA-16 (miR-16) as biomarkers for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia (PE). Also, we compared the diagnostic values of miR-16, UCA1 and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) in PE. Furthermore, we investigated the interaction between miR-16 and UCA1/PAPP-A. ⋯ Taken together, the evidence suggests that UCA1 could be used as a more valuable biomarker in the diagnosis of PE. Meanwhile, the reduced expression of UCA1 could exert a positive effect by reducing the expression of PAPP-A in the pathogenesis of PE.

Nomogram for predicting reflux esophagitis with routine metabolic parameters: a retrospective study.
The prevalence of reflux esophagitis (RE) is relatively high around the world. We investigated routine metabolic parameters for associations with RE prevalence and severity, creating a user-friendly RE prediction nomogram. ⋯ Our study highlights the association between the routine metabolic parameters and RE prevalence and severity. The nomogram may be of great value for the prediction of RE prevalence.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a common malignant tumor of the digestive system, posing a serious threat to the life of patients. This study aims to investigate the role of LINC00847 and the LINC00847/miR-455-3p/HDAC4 mechanism in PC progression. ⋯ Our findings reveal that LINC00847 potentially plays a key role in the carcinogenesis of PC progression. This effect may be mediated via regulating the miR-455-3p/HDAC4 axis. This study provides insights into the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying PC and opens avenues for potential therapeutic interventions.

There are epidemiological - not necessary causal - observations that link perinatal paracetamol (acetaminophen) exposure to impaired neuro-cognition and behaviour, but animal models may assist to better understand the mechanisms. ⋯ Models should further integrate clinical indications, as non-exposure is the obvious safest setting in the absence of an indication. Besides pain and fever and related to the cannabinoid hypothesis, this should include perinatal brain injury, as there is animal experimental evidence that cannabinoids are neuroprotective in newborn brain injury or asphyxia, further supported by evidence from non-perinatal models of paracetamol-related neuroprotective effects.
