To investigate the role and mechanism of miRNA-21 in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). ⋯ miRNA might be a biological marker and therapeutic target in NEC diagnosis and treatment.

Recently published case reports suggest the benefit of empagliflozin use in subjects with glycogen storage disease Ib (GSD Ib). ⋯ Empagliflozin may be a new safe treatment in GSD Ib patients with an advanced stage of the disease.

Thyroid iodide transporters, Na+/I- symporter (NIS) and pendrin (PDS), are responsible for supplying this vital micronutrient for thyroid hormone synthesis by thyroid peroxidase (TPO). Both proteins were shown to be expressed, apart from the thyroid, also in other human tissues, including lactating mammary gland. NIS expression in human breast cancers has been widely studied. On the other hand, until now PDS mRNA levels in breast tumor tissue have been estimated only in high throughput analyses. Previously, we have observed that TPO is expressed in normal and cancerous human breast tissues and shows enzymatic activity. However, biochemical activity of TPO in human breast cancer cells requires iodide transport by NIS and PDS. Therefore, to extend our previous study on TPO expression and function in human breast tumors we performed analysis of NIS and PDS levels in the same group of patients. ⋯ This study provides valuable information important for consideration in diagnostic or therapeutic application of radioiodine in breast cancer management.

The present study aimed to determine whether the presence of cardiac hypertrophy due to arterial hypertension is associated with a change in the activity of the oxytocinergic system in cardiomyocytes. ⋯ The presence of arterial hypertension is associated with increased activity of the oxytocinergic system in the heart, especially in the area of the left ventricle. These findings support the important role of this system in the maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis.

Human glioma is known as the most frequent and primary malignant tumour of the central nervous system with high aggression and poor prognosis. Runx1 is essential for haematopoiesis and is associated with tumour progression in several types of cancers. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect and the possible regulatory mechanisms of Runx1 in glioma. ⋯ Runx1 promotes the development of glioma cells via JAK/STAT signalling pathway by inhibiting the activation of SOCS3/SOCS4 promoter.
