Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) represents common comorbidities of childhood obesity leading to interrupted sleep and sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation alters secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is an appetite regulator. However, little is known about the relation between BDNF and central obesity in children with SDB. The aim of the study was to evaluate BDNF level and anthropometric indices in relation to SDB in children with obesity. ⋯ Central obesity and decreased BDNF represent independent predictors for SDB in children with obesity. Anthropometric indices adjusted to height are a simple screening tool for SDB in obese children.

Haemoglobin A2 (HbA2), the tetramer of α- and δ-globin chains, is used as a diagnostic biomarker for β-thalassaemia carriers. The HbA2 levels are regulated by the presence of HPFH, δ-thalassaemia, HbA1/2 gene triplication, and variants of KLF1, β-globin gene, and HbF regulating QTLs. Saudi Arabia has a high incidence of borderline HbA2 levels, thereby making it difficult to classify the haemoglobinopathies. This study aims to investigate the association of known HbF enhancer QTL gene SNPs with HbA2 levels. ⋯ The haemoglobin switching modulators rs2071348, rs7482144, and rs5006884 are involved in regulation of HbA2 level with rs5006884 influencing the tetramer formation. Screening for haemoglobinopathies should take these SNPs into consideration, specifically in borderline HbA2 cases. Assiduous analysis of rs5006884 as HbA2 modulator for amelioration of disease severity is recommended.

We aimed to examine the change in the number and severity of visits to the emergency departments (EDs) and subsequent admissions for urgent urologic conditions in the early stage of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Poland. ⋯ The observed declines in ED visits and admissions were apparent with the significant effect of national lockdowns. Our results indicate that some of the patients requiring urgent medical help did not appear at the ED or came later than they would have done before the pandemic, presenting with more severe complaints.

The role of three-dimensional echocardiography (3D-ECHO) chamber quantification in children is still underestimated. ⋯ 3D-ECHO is a valuable tool for assessment of left ventricular volume, which strongly correlates and agrees with CMR. The right ventricular volumes calculated in 3D-ECHO tend to be significantly underestimated in comparison to CMR and corresponding left ventricular volumes obtained from 3D-ECHO. The use of coefficients developed by the study improves the consistency of right ventricular volumes measured by 3D-ECHO with results obtained by CMR and reduces the volumetric discrepancy between ventricles in 3D-ECHO.

In inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), osteopenia and osteoporosis constitute a significant medical problem. Cytokines, especially IL-17, play an important role in the pathogenesis of IBD and osteoporosis. Vitamin D is a regulator of bone metabolism, and helps maintain immune system homeostasis. ⋯ Inflammatory bowel diseases patients and persons from the CG did not differ in vitamin D or IL-17 levels. Patients with a mild course of the disease had a higher vitamin D concentration and bone mineral density. In UC, higher vitamin D concentrations were associated with lower IL-17 concentrations. The IBD patients with a severe course of the disease had a lower body mass than those in the CG and the patients with a mild course of the disease.
