For some cancers bone is the preferred site for metastasis and involves a cascade involving transition of epithelial cells to mesenchymal cells and subsequent intravasation to the blood and lymph vessels, and finally hematogenous dissemination to perivascular niches of the bone marrow sinusoids. It has been shown that protein kinase C can aid metastasis to bone. Hence, pharmacological inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) activity is thought of as a potential therapeutic option in bone metastatic lesions. The objective of the current study was to investigate how PKCs exert their effect on bone cancer metastasis and to test the efficacy of pharmacological inhibition of PKC on bone metastasis. ⋯ Our results indicate that PKC potentiates tumor metastasis to the bone by potentiating translation increase and can be putatively inhibited by pharmacological inhibition.

The main purpose of the present research was to study the anticancer effects of methylwogonin in A375 human malignant melanoma cells by evaluating its effects on apoptosis, DNA fragmentation, cancer cell invasion and the mTOR/PI3K/AKT signalling pathway. ⋯ Different doses of methylwogonin led to concentration-dependent downregulation of phosphorylated PI3K, AKT and mTOR.

The present study aimed to assess the prevalence and association of various bacterial infections with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Iran. ⋯ The present meta-analysis suggested that there was a significant association between H. pylori, C. pneumonia and M. pneumonia infections and CVD in Iran. These findings confirm the potential role of bacterial infections as predisposing factors for CVD.

Aberrant expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in patients with various cancer types. However, few studies have assessed lncRNAs in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study aimed to investigate the expression and impact of lncRNAs in OSCC. ⋯ Elevated expression of MALAT-1 in OSCC may play a role in tumorigenesis and/or metastasis. Further studies are necessary to identify the mechanism by which MALAT-1 influences SCC4 growth and migration and validate its increased expression in OSCC patients.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes which may result from an increase in systemic inflammation. Previously we have shown that serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are independently associated with inflammatory indicators. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inexpensive, widely available marker of inflammation. In the present study, we aimed to assess the longitudinal changes in NLR before and after parathyroidectomy. ⋯ We found a positive correlation of preoperative NLR with calcium and PTH levels in PHPT patients. After curative parathyroidectomy, NLR modestly decreased without changes in other hematological parameters.
