The aim of the study was to confirm whether higher levels of urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) are associated with mortality risk scores in severe septic patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). ⋯ In severe septic AKI patients, high levels of NGAL, KIM-1 and NAG are associated with mortality risk scores. Urinary NGAL, KIM-1 and NAG concentrations higher than 102.5 ng/ml, 7.3 ng/ml and 15.4 U/l respectively may be used to predict increased of death risk scores.

Tetracosactide is an engineered peptide that applies the same biological impacts as the endogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone. Previous studies indicated that tetracosactide has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neurotrophic activity. In this study, we hypothesized that tetracosactide may have protective effects in spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury. ⋯ The findings showed for the first time that tetracosactide shows significant neuroprotective activity against ischemia-reperfusion injury of the spinal cord.

There is a 3-fold higher prevalence of cardiovascular complications in patients with type 1 diabetes. The aim was to assess the relationship between subclinical atherosclerosis and visceral fat and fatty liver in diabetic adolescents. ⋯ In the present study, fatty liver and HbA1c were associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in lean adolescents with T1D.

This study was conducted to compare the clinical effects of unilateral pedicle screw fixation and interbody fusion with PEEK cage (UPSFC) and standalone expandable fusion cage (SAEFC) on unilateral lumbar disc herniation. ⋯ Both SAEFC and UPSFC are effective techniques. UPSFC may be a better choice for patients with lumbar disc herniation and unilateral limb symptoms of nerve root in view of the advantages of better low back pain relief and low subsidence rate.

The aim of the study was to evaluate whether serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) within the normal range in euthyroid subjects (having normal free triiodothyronine (fT3) and thyroxine (fT4)) is related to the risk of overall mortality or a composite endpoint of death and nonfatal events. ⋯ The significant association of higher range of normal serum TSH in euthyroid middle-aged adults with the risk of death and nonfatal adverse outcomes in women alone cannot be accounted for by the action of thyroid hormone and is consistent with involvement of TSH in the pro-inflammatory state.
