Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycaemia causing changes in plasma lipoproteins, which leads to insulin resistance, secretion defects or both. The present study aimed to evaluate the ability of 2-dodecyl-6-methoxy-cyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione (DMDD) isolated from Averrhoa carambola L. roots to lower hyperglycaemia and to investigate its potential mechanism in diabetic mice. ⋯ DMDD possessed hypoglycaemic activity due to its potential mechanism involving PPARγ-mediated adipocyte endocrine regulation.

The aim of this study was to assess quality of life among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated as outpatients. The specific question was: does the quality of life of RA patients depend on demographic variables and clinical variables? ⋯ The study results may be helpful for further health-related studies on quality of life among RA studies and in making therapeutic decisions concerning quality of life improvement.

Previous studies have shown that endothelial cell senescence is involved in cardiovascular diseases such as cardiac fibrosis, atherosclerosis and heart failure. Accumulating evidence indicates that apelin exerts protective effects on ageing-related endothelial dysfunction. In this study, we aim to investigate the role of the apelin/APJ axis in angiotensin II (AngII)-induced endothelium senescence and its associated mechanisms. ⋯ The apelin/APJ axis improved AngII-induced HUVEC senescence via the AMPK/SIRT1 signaling pathway, and the underlying mechanisms might be associated with reduced ROS production and enhanced telomerase activity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response in terms of lipid profile, glycemia and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein after an oral fat load (OFL) with a non-dairy cheese cream containing fermented soybean extract soy, compared to a dairy cheese. ⋯ A non-dairy cheese cream, containing 75% fermented soybean extract, caused a minor increase of lipid profile and of hs-CRP during OFL compared to a dairy cheese cream in healthy subjects.

The long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) urothelial cancer associated 1 (UCA1) and metastasis associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) are known to impact cancer cell regulation. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between the expression of these lncRNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and disease prognosis. ⋯ These results imply that the up-regulation of UCA1 and MALAT1 lncRNAs in ESCC tissues can impact the degree of tumor progression and is predictive of postoperative survival. Therefore, the expression levels of these lncRNAs can be used as measurement indexes to determine the prognosis of ESCC patients.
