The number of reoperations increases with the growing number of operations performed. ⋯ Indications for stabilizing or preservation of the mobility of the operated segment should provide for the nature of the lesions, and anatomical and surgical conditions.

The present study aimed to investigate the differences in the proteomic expression between uncomplicated parapneumonic pleural effusion (UPPE) and complicated parapneumonic pleural effusion (CPPE). ⋯ In pleural effusion in patients with CPPE, there are enhanced expressions of proteins concerning glucose and amino acid metabolism, NADH regeneration, and HIF-1 signalling pathways together with decreased expressions of proteins concerning protein polymerization, blood coagulation, platelet activation, and complement activation.

There is growing interest in head-to-head comparison between different lipid-lowering nutraceuticals. The aim of our study was to test the lipid-lowering effect of dietary supplementation with low-dose monacolins from red yeast rice (2.8 mg per daily dose) combined with berberine (Armolipid Plus®) or highly standardized artichoke extract versus placebo. ⋯ Patients with polygenic hypercholesterolemia experienced a significant improvement in several cardiovascular risk factors in both ATC and Armolipid Plus® groups.

Structural abnormalities in the shoulder joint are a common complication post stroke, and the consequent pain and functional limitations become devastating quality of life problems for such patients. Shock wave therapy is a non-invasive method that can enhance the level of perfusion in ischaemic tissues, relieve inflammation, and promote healing. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) on pain and disability levels in stroke patients with shoulder structural abnormalities. ⋯ The addition of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) to a designed physical therapy program is more efficient in reducing shoulder structural abnormalities, pain, and disability in subacute stroke patients.

Positive regulatory domain containing 16 (PRDM16) protein represents the key regulator of brown adipose tissue (BAT) development. It induces brown fat phenotype and represses white adipose tissue specific genes through the association with C-terminal binding co-repressor proteins (CtBP1 and CtBP2). In healthy adults presence of BAT has been associated with lower glucose, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Our aim was to analyze the association of PRDM16 gene (rs12409277) and CtBP2 gene (rs1561589) polymorphisms with body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose level and lipid profile of adolescents. ⋯ Our study suggests that rs12409277 and rs1561589 polymorphism might have an influence on total and LDL cholesterol levels in adolescents. Larger studies should be performed in order to confirm our results.
