A dilated inferior mesenteric vein has been reported in rectal cancer patients. However, no study has yet reported inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) enlargement in rectal cancer. We aimed to assess the relationship between the IMA diameter and rectal cancer. ⋯ The IMA in rectal cancer patients enlarges as the TNM stage gets higher. The IMA diameter can be accepted as a possibly important marker for the staging of rectal cancer.

To explore the function of interleukin 1α (IL-1α) in bladder cancer (BCa). ⋯ Our findings suggested that IL-1α might be a therapy target for BCa malignant progression.

Multiple myeloma is the third most common blood cancer in Europe and accounts for approx. 10-15% of these cancers. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence, prevalence, mortality and survival in multiple myeloma (ICD code: C90.0) patients in Poland in the years 2008-2017. ⋯ The incidence and prevalence of multiple myeloma and survival rates in Poland were continuously increasing in the studied period. These trends may result from the aging of Polish society, better recognisability of multiple myeloma and/or improved access to increasingly more effective therapies in Poland. The impact of these factors on the epidemiology of multiple myeloma requires further studies.

Contusion spinal cord injury is involved in a number of cellular, biochemical and molecular changes. We studied the overall expression pattern of miRNAs on day 1 and 3 after spinal cord injury and the involved pathways. ⋯ The results suggested that miR-19a plays a potential role in halting the neuronal cell death spinal cord injury and that the protective role of miR-19a may be due to its regulatory effect on pro-apoptotic genes.

To evaluate the relationship between electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use and the risk of stroke when compared to non-smokers. ⋯ The ENDS usage appears to be associated with a higher risk of stroke compared to non-use, whereas there was no association between former ENDS use and the risk of stroke.
