We evaluated whether 12-week intake of molecular hydrogen (H2) in 5 overweight adults (3 women; age: 50.2 ±11.9 years, body mass index: 29.4 ±2.1 kg/m2) affects brain levels of the glutamate-glutamine-GABA cycle, critical amino acid neurotransmitters in the mechanism of neuronal activation during appetite regulation. ⋯ We showed a possible hydrogen-driven upregulation of neurotransmitters involved in appetite stimulation leading to hunger suppression and weight loss. Further studies analyzing appetite-controlling metabolic pathways affected by H2 would require monitoring of additional biomarkers of satiation and satiety during different feeding regimens.

The prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is generally good in cases of high radiation sensitivity but poor in cases exhibiting radiation resistance; this resistance has been attributed to the presence of cancer stem cells. In recent years, CD98hc overexpression has been associated with poor prognosis in various types of cancers. CD98 is a heterodimer of heavy and light chains and is strongly involved in cell proliferation, survival, migration, and adhesion. We investigated whether CD98hc can be used as a cancer stem cell marker for HNSCC. ⋯ CD98hc-positive cells exhibited cancer stem cell-like properties in all cell lines. Thus, CD98hc is a potential marker of radiation sensitivity as well as a potential therapeutic target for improved survival rates of patients with HNSCC.

The estimation of global burden of neck pain is lacking. To estimate the trends and burden of neck pain by sex, age, region, and sociodemographic index (SDI). ⋯ The age-standardized incidence rate and age-standardized DALY rate of neck pain decreased globally from 1990 to 2019. However, there were significant differences concerning sex, age, and regional distributions. Therefore, targeted prevention interventions and risk factor control measures should be reasonably allocated.

Thyroid cancers are the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. Increasing evidence has suggested potential roles for cancer susceptibility candidate 15 (CASC15) in thyroid cancer. Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) accounts for 80% of thyroid cancer, posing a great threat to public health. The present study aims to investigate the potential roles of CASC15 in PTC. ⋯ Downregulated CASC15 inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of thyroid cancer. Therefore, CASC15 may be an oncogene in thyroid cancer and may serve as a target marker for the treatment of thyroid cancer.

This study aimed to explore the effect of curcumin on the activity of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced proximal renal tubular epithelial cells (PRTECs) and to analyze the molecular mechanism by which curcumin regulates their occurrence. ⋯ Curcumin inhibits LPS-induced PRTEC death by regulating ADAMTS18 methylation and AKT/Notch pathways.
