Recently, NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and pyroptosis have been reported to be involved in traumatic brain injury-induced acute lung injury (TBI-ALI). Studies have shown that triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (TREM-1) may be one of the upstream molecules regulating NLRP3/pyroptosis, and 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3-receptor (5-HT3R) antagonists can inhibit NLRP3/pyroptosis. However, the role of TRME-1 in TBI-ALI, the therapeutic effect of 5-HT3R inhibition on TBI-ALI and its mechanism are still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of ondansetron, a 5-HT3 inhibitor, on TBI-ALI, and to explore whether the underlying mechanism is related to the regulation of TREM-1. ⋯ Ondansetron alleviated TBI-ALI. In terms of mechanism, TREM-1 promotes TBI-ALI via the NLRP3-related pyroptosis pathway, and the protective effect of ondansetron on TBI-ALI may be related to the inhibition of TREM-1.

Uterine fibroids (UFs) are benign tumors of the female reproductive system originating from the smooth muscle of the uterus. Currently, progesterone is known to play a key role in the differentiation of the myometrial tissue to form UFs and their abnormal growth. The mechanism of action of progesterone in UF tumorigenesis involves its effect on increasing the concentrations and dysregulation of selected growth factors. ⋯ No significant differences were found between TNF-α concentrations in the serum of patients with UFs treated with UPA, and patients without UPA treatment. In addition, our data analysis did not show significant differences in the concentrations of IGF-1 and PAI-1 between patients with UFs and the control group. Further studies on the dependence of specific symptoms on selected growth factors are mandatory.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of nurse-led multidisciplinary cooperation in the early screening and protection of fecal water dermatitis in hospitalized patients with enterostomy. ⋯ Nurse-led multidisciplinary cooperation can improve early screening and protection of fecal water dermatitis in hospitalized patients with enterostomy and improve the quality of life of patients.

There are epidemiological - not necessary causal - observations that link perinatal paracetamol (acetaminophen) exposure to impaired neuro-cognition and behaviour, but animal models may assist to better understand the mechanisms. ⋯ Models should further integrate clinical indications, as non-exposure is the obvious safest setting in the absence of an indication. Besides pain and fever and related to the cannabinoid hypothesis, this should include perinatal brain injury, as there is animal experimental evidence that cannabinoids are neuroprotective in newborn brain injury or asphyxia, further supported by evidence from non-perinatal models of paracetamol-related neuroprotective effects.

Polypharmacy is commonly defined as the simultaneous use of five or more medications; however, there is a lack of consensus regarding the most appropriate definition. It is a significant predictor of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy in the population of older adults attending primary care in Portugal and to identify associated sociodemographic and clinical factors. ⋯ Polypharmacy was a very common occurrence in Portugal. Future primary healthcare policies should address polypharmacy.
