Biomaterial technology due to its lack of or minimal side effects in tissues has great potential. Traditionally biomaterials used were cobalt-chromium, stainless steel and nitinol alloys. Biomaterials such as magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) have good biocompatibility and consequently can be a potential material for medical implants. To date, the effects of AZ31 alloy stent on cell apoptosis are still unclear. The current investigation was designed to determine the effect of AZ31 alloy stent on necrosis and apoptosis of common bile duct (CBD) epithelial cells. ⋯ To conclude, it can be stated that AZ31 induces apoptosis via alteration in genes including nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), caspase-3, Bax and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and improved the hematological, hepatic and non-hepatic parameters.

the aim of the study was to investigate the contribution of TERT rs2736100 and rs2853669 gene polymorphisms in defining the genetic predisposition to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), their association with different prognostic markers, and their impact on survival, outcome, and the prognosis of affected patients. Also, we investigated the association of TERT SNPs in AML in the presence or absence of DNMT3A (R882), NPM1, and FLT3 mutations. ⋯ TERT rs2853669 and rs2736100 polymorphisms were not risk factors for developing AML in the Romanian population, but the TERT rs2853669 variant genotype had a negative effect on AML patients' overall survival in the presence of other known prognostic factors.

Serum ferritin (SF) is an acute-phase reactant in inflammatory diseases. Our aim was to analyze the clinical implications of SF in Kawasaki disease (KD). ⋯ SF is implied to be a helpful biomarker for forecasting IVIG-nonresponsive KD, coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) and MAS tendency.

In the present study, we aimed to examine the effects of the administration of whey protein through rectal enema to rats with acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis on the pathways of nuclear-related factor-2 (Nrf-2), haem oxygenase-1 (HO-1), nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), active protein kinase-1 (AP-1), tumour necrotising factor-α (TNF-α), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), IL-6, IL-10. ⋯ Whey protein modulates Nrf2/HO-1 and NF-kB pathways, thereby creating a therapeutic effect against colonic inflammation induced by acetic acid (AA) due to its anti-inflammatory effects.

The study was designed to assess the expression of long non-coding RNA HOTAIR (lncRNA HOTAIR) in tissues and peripheral blood of patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In addition, we also investigated the prognostic correlation between the expression level of lncRNA HOTAIR in tumour tissues and peripheral blood of patients with advanced HCC and sunitinib monotherapy. ⋯ The expression of lncRNA HOTAIR was up-regulated in tumour tissue and peripheral blood in patients with advanced HCC. In addition, the expression level of lncRNA HOTAIR was one of the indicators predicting the effectiveness of sunitinib therapy.
