Anti-cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgG seropositive and/or titer are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, it is not clear whether CMV end-organ disease may have a relation with development of CVD or chronic heart diseases. ⋯ Symptomatic CMV tissue-invasive diseases were associated with a higher risk of new-onset MI and CHF.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease which presents with an earlier age of onset and increased symptom severity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between regulation of miRNAs and AD. ⋯ Comprehensive analysis of all miRNA studies reveals cooperation in miRNA signatures whether in brain tissues or in CSF and peripheral blood. More and more studies suggest that miRNAs may play crucial roles as diagnostic biomarkers and/or as new therapeutic targets in AD. According to biomarkers, we can identify the preclinical phase early, which provides an important time window for therapeutic intervention.

Traditional approaches to stress management are difficult to learn and to implicate in daily life. Emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) have become a target of extensive study for recreational and medical purposes. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a crucial role in stress response, post-stress relaxation, and recovery. This study aimed to assess the effect of modified VR intervention on short-term heart rate variability (HRV) and perceived anxiety levels in healthy volunteers affected by moderate stress. The stressors included mental arithmetic tasks. ⋯ These findings suggest that a medical device with pre-installed Pure Purr software had a significant effect on the recovery of the ANS in healthy volunteers affected by moderate stress.

Congenital heart defects (CHD) are one of the most commonly diagnosed congenital malformations in fetuses and newborns. The aim of the study was to determine whether inter-pregnancy interval (IPI), maternal age or number of pregnancies had any influence on the recurrence of congenital heart disease in subsequent pregnancies. ⋯ The optimal IPI to reduce the risk of recurrence of CHD is 24 months. Shorter intervals are related to a higher risk of recurrence of CHD in the next pregnancy and are independent on the age of the woman and parity.

The phase IIIb open-label ODYSSEY APPRISE study prospectively assessed the safety and efficacy of alirocumab (a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 [PCSK9] inhibitor) in a real-life setting in high cardiovascular risk patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) not at goal despite maximally tolerated dose statins ± other lipid-lowering therapies (NCT02476006). This post-hoc analysis assessed patient adherence to statins and alirocumab, plus alirocumab efficacy and safety, according to concomitant statin intensity and prior ezetimibe usage. ⋯ In a real-life setting, patient adherence to alirocumab was high. Alirocumab provided clinically significant reductions in LDL-C, with most patients achieving LDL-C treatment targets across background statin therapy and prior ezetimibe therapy subgroups.
