Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been indicated in adverse health outcomes across the lifespan, including severe infection-related outcomes. Yet, data are scarce on the potential role of CM in severe COVID-19-related outcomes as well as on mechanisms underlying this association. ⋯ Our results add to the growing knowledge base indicating the role of childhood maltreatment in negative health outcomes across the lifespan, including severe COVID-19-related outcomes. The identified factors underlying this association represent potential intervention targets for mitigating the harmful effects of childhood maltreatment in COVID-19 and similar future pandemics.

Predicting disease recurrence in patients with endometriosis: an observational study.
Despite surgical and pharmacological interventions, endometriosis can recur. Reliable information regarding risk of recurrence following a first diagnosis is scant. The aim of this study was to examine clinical and survey data in the setting of disease recurrence to identify predictors of risk of endometriosis recurrence. ⋯ Following an initial diagnosis of endometriosis, clinical decision-making regarding disease management should take into consideration the presence of bowel lesions, adhesions and adenomyosis, which increase the risk of endometriosis recurrence.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition characterized by the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. Despite its widespread prevalence worldwide, the causal link between GERD and various cancer risks has not been fully established, and past medical research has often underestimated or overlooked this relationship. ⋯ This study identifies a significant causal relationship between GERD and increased cancer risk, highlighting its role in cancer development and underscoring the necessity of incorporating GERD management into cancer prevention strategies.

The non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) serves as a novel composite lipid indicator for atherosclerosis. However, the association between NHHR and mortality in patients with diabetes or prediabetes remains unclear. Consequently, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between NHHR and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in US adults with diabetes or prediabetes. ⋯ Among US adults with diabetes or prediabetes, a U-shaped association was observed between NHHR and all-cause mortality, whereas an L-shaped association was identified with cardiovascular mortality. The inflection points for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality were 2.72 and 2.83, respectively.

Vitamin A is essential for physiological processes like vision and immunity. Vitamin A's effect on gut microbiome composition, which affects absorption and metabolism of other vitamins, is still unknown. Here we examined the relationship between gut metagenome composition and six vitamin A-related metabolites (two retinoid: -retinol, 4 oxoretinoic acid (oxoRA) and four carotenoid metabolites, including beta-cryptoxanthin and three carotene diols). ⋯ Our results show strong links between circulating carotene compounds and gut microbiome composition and potential links to a healthy diet pattern.
