The purpose of this study was to evaluate upper airway in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome patients and habitual snorers, and to determine the correlation with apnea-hypopnea index. ⋯ Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea patients results from changes in the upper airway. Anatomic and functional findings correlated with the apnea-hypopnea index. In the majority of patients with OSAHS, pharyngeal abnormalities and nasal obstruction were found to be statistically significant (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 14).

Direct current therapy with/without lidocaine iontophoresis in myofascial pain syndrome.
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of lidocaine iontophoresis for inactivation of trigger points (TrPs) in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). ⋯ Direct current therapy with/without lidocaine iontophoresis were determined to be effective treatment modalities in TrP management. These treatment modalities are non-invasive, cost effective and provide long term improvement. Thus, these modalities could be safely used in the management of MPS with minimal side effects, particularly if patients may not accept injection or other treatments (Tab. 3, Ref. 44). Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) of the n. medianus, with clinically significant neurological findings helps in diagnosing a number of different cervical spine lesions. SSEP of the n. medianus and neurological observations also aid in diagnosticis of the disc-radicular conflict. ⋯ The 95% confidence interval (CI) is 0.87 (0.81-0.93) (Tab. 3, Fig. 4, Ref. 23). Repair of an inguinal hernia is one of the most common operations performed in general surgery with significant costs to health care and society. Lichtenstein mesh repair has been the most widely performed groin hernia repair. In this study, we wanted to emphasize the effectiveness of local anesthesia in groin hernia repair by single-surgeon's experience. ⋯ Lichtenstein mesh repair under local anesthesia is an effective day case technique, particularly in the elderly and medically unfit patients. The economic benefits are enhanced by low morbidity and low recurrence rates (Ref. 5). Full Text (Free, PDF) www.bmj.sk.

The latest research outcomes indicate that metallothionein (MT) levels in peripheral blood and serum from cancer patients can provide many interesting information about type or clinical stage of the disease, or response to therapy. MT plays a key role in transport of essential heavy metals, detoxification of toxic metals and protection of cells against oxidation stress. ⋯ Automated electrochemical detection of MT allows its serial analysis in a very small volume with excellent sensitivity, reliability and reproducibility and therefore it can be considered as a new tool for cancer diagnosis (Fig. 4, Ref. 55).
