Association of apelin and AF in patients with implanted loop recorders undergoing catheter ablation.
Previous studies showed an association between apelin and atrial fibrillation (AF). The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with paroxysmal AF on plasmatic apelin concentrations. ⋯ Our study showed a significant increase in apelin levels after the reduction of AF burden via PVI and an inverse correlation with AF burden. Apelin might be a promising marker of AF (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 28).

To evaluate vitamin D levels in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), depression and both of them, thus to find out whether vitamin D may be a common causative factor of CSU and depression. ⋯ Lower 25(OH)D levels in CSU and/or depression may appear as a secondary phenomenon, which means being result of these diseases rather than the cause (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 41). Inherited metabolic disorders of glycoconjugate metabolism include congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) - disorders in biosynthesis of glycoconjugates; and some of the lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) - disorders of their degradation. This review summarizes the brief characteristics of metabolic pathways of synthesis and catabolism of glycoconjugates as well as the latest update of relevant enzymatic defects discovered in population. Every year the number of known subtypes of these disorders dramatically increases as a result of high-throughput analytical infrastructure applied. ⋯ Thus, disorders of glycoconjugate metabolism should be considered and ruled out in any unexplained syndrome. The collaboration between scientists and physicians plays an important role in the progress of such personalized diagnostics, that is essential mainly for rare diseases (Tab. 2, Fig. 1, Ref. 49). Keywords: congenital disorders of glycosylation, lysosomal storage disorders.

Bacillus anthracis is a causative agent of zoonotic anthrax disease. In the last years, significant progress in therapy and diagnosis of anthrax was made. Concurrently, knowledge about anthrax progression, molecular pathology and release of anthrax toxin during the disease has improved. This review covers the recent progress in this field. ⋯ Currently, the microorganism is considered one of the top biological warfare agents due to lethality, long term stability of spores, easy dissemination and production. The recent research is focused on countermeasures suitable for reduction of consequences by a misuse of the microorganism in form of biological weapon (Tab. 3, Fig. 1, Ref. 101). The purpose of this paper is to present the development and design of an abdominal retractor which allows a single person to perform operations and the fixation of the operation instruments can be done with one hand. The additional devices make the operation more comfortable for surgeons. ⋯ The present abdominal retractor is user-friendly and all components are easily sterilized by conventional methods (Fig. 7, Ref. 6) Keywords: abdominal retractor, stainless steel retractor, standard surger, fixation system of the frame, lamp, video camera, conventional methods.
