Dear editors: We propose novel strategies to combat the COVID-19 outbreak, that are aimed at high-risk groups and might reduce the progression to severe forms of COVID and thus decrease the very high case fatality rate. Following the first reports of the outbreak of several cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome in the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of December 2019, a novel beta coronavirus, named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV) as the main causative agent was identified while the disease associated with was named by WHO as COVID-19 (1, 2). The outbreak has rapidly spread globally with more than 150.000 cases detected in over 100 countries as of March 13, 2020. ⋯ Given the alarming global situation and rapidly evolving large scale pandemics, there is an urgent need for effective strategies to prevent the spread of the disease and decrease its high CFR. The gravity of the situation requires to consider even novel unorthodox strategies to control the outbreak and high lethality of COVID-19. (Tab. 2, Ref. 21). Keywords: COVID-19, coronavirus, distress syndrome, lopinavir/ritonavir, ribavirin, chloroquine, interferons.

Observational Study
Endoscopic discectomy as an effective treatment of a herniated intervertebral disc.
Prospective observational multicentre two-arm parallel study describing clinical outcome after endoscopic discectomy provided via transforaminal and interlaminar approach. ⋯ Because both procedures are strictly percutaneous; they are now more commonly performed by interventional pain physicians as a safe and effective alternative to open surgical spine procedures (Tab. 3, Fig. 7, Ref. 19).

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by macrophage polarization, and at present, no drug therapy is available. Although grape-seed polyphenols (GSP) showed an anti-AAA effect, the role of GSP in the phenotype shift in macrophages remains unknown. ⋯ GSP could be a pharmacologically potent agent in the treatment of AAA (Tab. 1, Fig. 3,Ref. 20). Text in PDF www.elis.sk Keywords: grape-seed polyphenols, abdominal aortic aneurysm, macrophage, inflammatory, polarization.

The Covid-19 pandemic has fully opened the debate on the complexity of the problem, which goes far beyond medical and epidemiological analyzes and proposals, although these are key to the decisions of leaders in the decisive sphere. Critical situations always force us to look for new methods. ⋯ The adaptation of the faculty administration at the time of this crisis is admirable in many respects and essential for the long-term societal struggle with the pandemic. Nicotine at high concentrations induces apoptosis in trophoblastic cells through induction of cell cytotoxicity and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Methamphetamine in low dose has pharmaceutical properties. It seems that this components in low dose can protect the trophoblastic cells from nicotine-induced cell death. ⋯ Methamphetamine in very low dose suppressed the JEG-3 cell death induced by high dose of nicotine (Fig. 5, Ref. 48) Keywords: methamphetamine, nicotine, cell death, NO.
