Objective evaluation of burn and post-surgical scars and the accuracy of subjective scar type judgment.
The true proliferation degree of burn and operation scars during their maturation was poorly defined. The objective of this study was to provide a quantitative evaluation of the proliferation degree of deep-partial thickness burn and surgical suture wound scars after wound healing and the accuracy of subjective judgment of scar types. ⋯ Scar atrophy occurs after one year in burns, but not in the surgical suture wound group. It is important to take anti-scar therapy for surgical wounds as well as burn wounds. The various scar types could not be judged precisely in a subjective manner.

Effects of activated protein C on coagulation and fibrinolysis in rabbits with endotoxin induced acute lung injury.
Sepsis induced acute lung injury (ALI) as a common syndrome in clinical practice has a high mortality. Recombinant human activated protein C (APC) can significantly reduce the mortality of patients with severe sepsis. Several studies have implicated that APC may be protective in ALI. ⋯ Anti-coagulation and pro-fibrinolysis activity may be two of the possible mechanisms by which activated protein C attenuated endotoxin-induced ALI.

Functional protection of pentoxifylline against spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury in rabbits: necrosis and apoptosis effects.
Little is known about neuronal death mechanisms following spinal cord ischemia. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of pentoxifylline (PTX) against spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. ⋯ PTX may induce protection against ischemia injury in the spinal cord, thereby preventing both necrosis and apoptosis. A major mode of cell death in spinal cord ischemia/reperfusion injury is necrosis while apoptosis is not dominant.

Mechanisms of improvement of left ventricle remodeling by trans-planting two kinds of autologous bone marrow stem cells in pigs.
The necrosis of a large number of myocardial cells after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) results in a decrease of cardiac function and ventricle remodeling. Stem cell transplantation could improve cardiac function after AMI, but the involving mechanisms have not been completely understood. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of transplantation of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BM-MNC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) via the coronary artery on the ventricle remodeling after AMI as well as the mechanisms of the effects of transplantation of different stem cells on ventricle remodeling. ⋯ Transplantation of autologous BM-MNC and MSCs in pigs can improve the condition of left ventricular remodeling and recover the cardiac functions after AMI. The improvement of cardiac functions is related to the increase of blood vessels, the increased expression of VEGF and bFGF, the reduction of myocardial cell apoptosis, and the decrease of NF-kappaB level in cardiac muscle tissues after stem cell transplantation.

Is the use of cardiopulmonary bypass for isolated coronary artery bypass an independent predictor of mortality and morbidity in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction?
Patients presenting with severe left ventricular dysfunction (SLVD) undergoing conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CCABG) are at an increased risk of perioperative mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors responsible for mortality and morbidity among patients with SLVD by comparing CCABG and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCAB). ⋯ Using cardiopulmonary bypass is not an independent predictor of mortality and morbidity in patients with SLVD. Isolated CABG can be safely performed in SLVD patients with acceptable postoperative morbidity and mortality in addition to encouraging home discharge rates and higher quality of life. Therefore, CCABG remains a viable option in selected patients with SLVD.
