Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis of randomized trials comparing the effectiveness of on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass.
The growing enthusiasm for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) without cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is emerging, but the role of off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) in clinical practice remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in the incidences of stroke, atrial fibrillation (AF), and myocardial infarction (MI) between OPCAB and conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CCABG) by meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials. ⋯ Our meta-analyses suggest that OPCAB reduces the risk of postoperative AF compared with CCABG, but there is no significant difference in the incidences of stroke and MI between OPCAB and CCABG.

Randomized Controlled TrialImpact of fish oil enriched total parenteral nutrition on elderly patients after colorectal cancer surgery.
Polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids may beneficially influence healing processes and patient outcomes. The aim of this research was to study the clinical efficacy of fish oil enriched total parenteral nutrition in elderly patients after colorectal cancer surgery. ⋯ Fish oil 0.2 g/kg per day administrated to elderly patients after colorectal surgery was safe and may shorten the length of hospital stay and improve clinical outcomes.

Organ transplantation represents an important advance in modern medical science, and it has benefited many patients with organ failure; however, the severe deficiency of organ sources has been a bottleneck that has limited the benefits this technology can bring. The aim of this study was to show the results of a survey on Chinese people's awareness and attitudes toward organ donation. ⋯ We conclude that at present the Chinese public has a basic understanding about organ transplantation and donation. The majority respondents were in favor of deceased organ donation and were willing to donate their own organs after death.

Treatment of cryptococcal meningitis with low-dose amphotericin B and flucytosine.
Amphotericin B (0.7 mg/kg) with flucytosine is the standard treatment for cryptococcal meningitis. However, the long treatment course can induce adverse reactions in patients; therefore, reducing the dose may decrease such reactions. We performed a retrospective analysis of treatment effects and adverse reactions when amphotericin B (0.4 mg/kg or 0.7 mg/kg per day) and flucytosine were used together to treat HIV-negative patients with cryptococcal meningitis. ⋯ Low-dose treatment regimens were better tolerated than high-dose ones.
