Until now, information on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Germany has been based mainly on data from the public health offices. It may be assumed that these data do not include many cases of asymptomatic and mild infection. ⋯ Seroprevalence was low after the first wave of the pandemic but rose markedly during the second and third waves. The missed-case rate trended downward over the course of the pandemic.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Short-Term Hypocalcemia Prophylaxis With Calcitriol Before Thyroidectomy–a Multicenter Randomized Trial.
Total thyroidectomy is the most common surgical treatment of thyroid diseases, and postoperative hypocalcemia is its most common complication. Hypocalcemia prolongs the patient's hospital stay and impairs his or her quality of life. Although a low vitamin D level is a recognized risk factor, the utility of preoperative vitamin D administration to prevent postoperative hypocalcemia is unclear. In this trial, therefore, we studied the effect of giving vitamin D before total thyroidectomy. ⋯ Short-term administration of calcitriol did not affect the rate of occurrence of hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy, but did shorten its duration. The rate of postoperative hypocalcemia varied widely across hospitals, probably because of differences in surgical technique.

Approximately 4380 cases of cervical carcinoma were diagnosed in Germany in 2016. In women who had not participated in early detection programs, cervical carcinoma was usually already in an advanced stage at the time of diagnosis. Certified structures for care in conformity with the existing guidelines are available. ⋯ Despite the introduction of new treatments, the outcome of patients with advanced cervical carcinoma has not much improved. In the surgical treatment of cervical carcinoma, the open approach is now favored. The sentinel node biopsy technique has become well established for the surgical staging of small tumors. Controlled trials are needed so that the outcome of women with cervical carcinoma, particularly in its advanced and metastatic stages, can be improved.
