Data on the prevalence and regional distribution of the metabolic syndrome in Germany are lacking, in particular for primary care. ⋯ The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in German primary care is high. Prevention efforts should focus in particular on differences in gender, socioeconomic status, and region.

Optimal wound management remains the subject of active research. Improved knowledge of physiological wound healing, systemic research into wound dressing and the evaluation of chemical disinfection have given rise to new approaches to wound care. ⋯ New findings in molecular and cell biology have improved our understanding of physiological wound healing, and approach to wound care and dressing.

Acetylic salicylic acid (aspirin) intolerance relates to altered generation and metabolism of arachidonic acid and eicosanoids, and prostaglandins and leukotrienes ingestion of salicylates or COX-inhibitors. ⋯ Asthma, rhinitis and nasal polyps, as well as chronic gastrointestinal irritation and urticaria following acetylic salicylic acid ingestion may suggest intolerance.

The so-called poster exhibition is an established element of medical meetings which often receives little attention. The aim of this study was to analyze the organization, acceptance and value of poster exhibitions. ⋯ The option of additional personal discussion with the poster presenter may lead to an increase of the rather modest participation of attendees at poster exhibitions. Poster exhibitions are of value in particular for young scientists and poster chairpersons.
