For the treatment of patients with cancer to be successful and well-tolerated, the complications and side effects of the disease and its treatment must be treated and limited as far as possible. Summarized recommendations based on the constantly increasing evidence in the area of supportive care must be defined, standardized, and communicated. ⋯ Supportive measures are an integral component of all oncological treatments. More research is needed to determine how side effects can be lessened and prevented.

Behavioral disorders such as aggressiveness, agitation, delusions, disinhibition, affect lability, and apathy arise in more than 90% of patients with dementia. Behavioral disorders are a major challenge and the greatest stress factor in everyday life for nursing personnel and for family members caring for the patient. ⋯ Because of an improved evidence base, the latest version of the German S3 guideline on the diagnosis and treatment of dementia places greater emphasis on non-pharmacological treatments for behavioral disorders in dementia than it did in the past. The global efficacy of such treatments against behavioral disorders is well documented. Nonetheless, because of the heterogeneity of interventions and varying standards of assessment, the evidence for the utility of certain specific methods in the treatment of specific behavioral disorders is still limited. More research is needed in this area.

The prevalence of latent/subclinical hypothyroidism is between 3% and 10%, according to epidemiologic studies that have been carried out in the USA, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. As persons with latent hypo - thyroidism are often asymptomatic, the diagnosis is often made incidentally in routine laboratory testing. ⋯ Limited data are available on the relevant clinical endpoints and undesired side effects of supplementation therapy. Physicians should advise patients about the indications for such treatment on an individual basis after due consideration of the risks and benefits.

Sjögren's syndrome is one of the more common inflammatory rheumatological diseases, with a prevalence of at least 0.4% in Germany. ⋯ The main considerations in the interdisciplinary care of patients with Sjögren's disease are measures to improve quality of life, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to keep disease activity in check, and management of the risk of lymphoma. Future therapeutic approaches must take the heterogeneity of the disease into account.

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in childhood and adolescence is 5-11 cases per 100 000 persons per year, corresponding to a new diagnosis of IBD in 800-1470 patients in Germany each year. ⋯ Children and adolescents with IBD or suspected IBD should be cared for by pediatric gastroenterologists in a center where such care is provided. Individualized treatment with multidisciplinary, family-oriented longterm care is particularly important. Drug trials in children and adolescents are needed so that the off-label use of drugs to patients in this age group can be reduced.
