Objective: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the main causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is strongly associated with HCC development, but the pathogenesis of HBV-related HCC remains obscure. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) has been implicated to enhance the replication of HBV and to promote the tumorigenesis of HCC. In this study, we aim to investigate the functional role of SIRT1 on HBV viral protein and HBV-induced HCC. ⋯ Additionally, functional studies showed that HBx-elevated SIRT1 could promote HCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. Importantly, HBx induced HCC proliferation and migration could be suppressed by Nicotinamide in a dose dependent manner. Conclusions: Our findings uncovered the positive role of SIRT1 in HBx-mediated tumorigenesis which implicated the potential role of SIRT1 in HBV-related HCC treatment.

Foot health-related quality of life in hemophiliacs: A case-control study.
Background: Haemophilia is considered as a chronic genetic disease related with alteration in coagulation mechanism which affects to health related quality of life (HQoL). Purpose: The goal compared marks of HQoL, in haemophiliacs with respect non haemophilic subjects. Methods: A population of 74 subjects, were recruited from association of haemophilic illness separated in haemophilic subjects (n = 37) and no haemophilic (n = 37). ⋯ Results: All S_FHSQ domains as foot pain, foot function, tootwear, general foot health, general health, physical activity and social capacity showed lower scores in the haemophilic than non-haemophilic group (P <0.01) except for vigour (P = 0.173). Regarding the rest sub-scale marks of S_FHSQ, showed no significant difference P <0.01. Conclusion: Subjects with a haemophilia showed significant worse foot QoL in all S_FHSQ domains except vigour domain compared with non-haemophilic subjects.

Several studies have been suggested that immunity plays a part in neurodevelopment and schizophrenia pathogenesis. Early age of onset in schizophrenia is associated with genetic factors which affect neurodevelopment. This study aims to identify immune abnormalities associated with neurodevelopmental impairments in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS) and adult-onset schizophrenia (AOS) patients. ⋯ These cytokines are altered in EOS and schizophrenia patients with neurodevelopmental impairments and demonstrated good classification abilities. These findings manifested that both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are contributed to the clinical and pathophysiological features of schizophrenia. Future works are expected to explore potential genetic effectors and predictors as well as therapeutic directions in personalized medicine for early-onset schizophrenia.

The purposes of the investigation were to examine the implications of long noncoding RNA growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5) in progression and clinicopathological factors of uterine cervical cancer, and patient survival in Taiwan. Genotypic distributions of two GAS5 genetic variants rs145204276 and rs55829688 were detected in 208 patients including 111 patients with invasive cancer, 97 with precancerous lesions as well as 307 control women using real-time polymerase chain reaction. It explored that patients with cervical precancerous lesion had lower rate of AGGCA deletion (Del) in both alleles (Del/Del) of GAS5 rs145204276 as compared with control women. ⋯ In addition, lymph node metastasis status exerted the most significantly predictive of 5 years survival rate. Conclusively, GAS5 polymorphism rs145204276 is probably applicable to predict 5 years survival HR of cervical cancer patients. However, the mechanism elucidating the methylation status and transcription function of rs145204276 in uterine cervical cancer needs to be delineated for its unique implication in uterine cervical cancer.

Inflammation is the root cause of many diseases that pose a serious threat to human health. Excessive inflammation can also result in preterm birth or miscarriage in pregnant women. Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne, CMD) is a well-known traditional health food and medicinal herb used in many countries to treat diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, cancer and other diseases. ⋯ TCMD also suppressed the release of mature IL-1β and activation of cleaved-caspase-1 via limited ASC oligomerization. Furthermore, TCMD significantly inhibited IL-1β secretion and pyroptotic cell death in human trophoblast cells. These results suggest that TCMD exhibits anti-inflammatory effects mediated via inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation suggesting therapeutic potential against inflammatory diseases, preterm birth, and miscarriage.
