Endogenous electric field (EF)-directed keratinocytes migration is known to play a key role in the wound re-epithelialization process. Although many molecules and signaling pathways are reported important for directional keratinocytes migration under EF, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Our previous research found that CD9, a trans-membrane protein, is involved in wound re-epithelialization and CD9 downregulation contributes to keratinocytes migration. ⋯ Also, we found that EF reduced AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity. Furthermore, AICAR, an AMPK activator, increased CD9 expression under EF, while compound C, an AMPK inhibitor, decreased CD9 expression in keratinocytes. Our results demonstrate that EF regulates CD9 expression and keratinocytes directional migration, in which AMPK pathway plays an important role.

Background: Fidgetin (FIGN), a conserved ATP-dependent enzyme, is regarded as a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk gene, but the prognostic implication of FIGN in HCC remains obscure. In this study, we investigate the expression of FIGN in HCC and to evaluate its prognostic value. Methods: A total of 216 patients with HCC who experienced hepatectomy were recruited in this study. ⋯ High expression of FIGN indicated shorter overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio: 4.569, P = 0.036) and disease-free survival (DFS) (hazard ratio: 6.487, P = 0.001). Conclusion: Our results indicate that high Fidgetin expression is associated with tumor progression and suggest a worse prognosis in HCC. Fidgetin might serve as a potential target for therapy.

Bu Yang Huan Wu decoction (BYHW) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that consists of several herbs and has been used in patients with ischemic stroke for centuries. Although powdered formula of BYHW has widely been prescribed in clinic nowadays, evidence-based effectiveness and mechanism of action of BYHW powdered product in stroke remain to be characterized. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 90 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h (ischemia/reperfusion; I/R) or sham surgery. ⋯ Post-I/R treatment with BYHW powdered product significantly reduced the infarct area and ameliorated neurofunctional defects in a dose-dependent manner. The dose dependence was associated with TNF-α downregulation and interleukin-10 (IL-10) induction. In summary, the present findings demonstrated that BYHW powdered product exhibited therapeutic efficacy for experimental stroke and a higher dose treatment may strengthen the effectiveness via inflammatory modulation.

Objective: In 2012, we proposed and described a modified triple incision technique (MTIT) for vulvar cancer patients with locally advanced disease. The MTIT has undergone a series of modifications, and a modified MTIT (M-MTIT) has been developed. The purpose of this study was to introduce the M-MTIT and compare it with the MTIT. ⋯ Kaplan-Meier survival graphs did not show significant differences in recurrence-free survival or overall survival between the two groups. Conclusions: The M-MTIT correlates with lower morbidity rates than the MTIT and does not compromise oncological safety. The M-MTIT can be considered a safe and feasible option for vulvar cancer patients with locally advanced disease.

Introduction: The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the long-term outcomes and factors associated with treatment failure of Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for postsurgical residual or recurrent nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs). Design and Methods: A total of 148 cases of postsurgical residual or recurrent NFPA patients were enrolled in the study. There were 111 cases with residual tumor and 37 cases with recurrent tumor. ⋯ Six patients (4.1%) developed new or worsening visual dysfunction. Four patients (2.7%) developed new cranial neuropathy. Conclusion: In this study, GKRS can offer a high tumor control rate as well as a low rate of complications in postsurgical residual or recurrent NFPA patients.
