Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, comparative study of human anti-TNF antibody adalimumab in combination with methotrexate and methotrexate alone in Taiwanese patients with active rheumatoid arthritis.
Adalimumab is a fully humanized monoclonal antibody that blocks tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, which is effective in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of adalimumab plus methotrexate (MTX) and MTX alone in Taiwanese patients with active RA. ⋯ Adalimumab in combination with MTX is well tolerated and provides significantly more clinical benefits than MTX alone in Taiwanese patients with active RA.

HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-229E are two of the four human coronaviruses that circulate worldwide. These two viruses are unique in their relationship towards each other. Phylogenetically, the viruses are more closely related to each other than to any other human coronavirus, yet they only share 65% sequence identity. ⋯ HCoV-NL63 is associated with croup in children, whereas all signs suggest that the virus probably causes the common cold in healthy adults. HCoV-229E is a proven common cold virus in healthy adults, so it is probable that both viruses induce comparable symptoms in adults, even though their mode of infection differs. Here, we present an overview of the current knowledge on both human coronaviruses, focusing on similarities and differences.

The Val108/158Met (rs4680) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene contributes to genetic susceptibility to schizophrenia, which is specifically related to impairments in executive functioning. A different genomic region composed of three SNPs (rs737865, rs4680, rs165599) within the COMT gene has been reported to be significantly associated with schizophrenia in Ashkenazi Jews. This study aims to clarify the association between these three SNPs and their haplotypes with schizophrenia and neurocognitive functioning, using both case-control and family-based designs. ⋯ The SNP rs165599, which has been mapped to the 3'-UTR region of the COMT gene, was significantly associated with schizophrenia in our family study, and possibly associated with the age of onset, delusion/hallucination symptom dimension, and CPT performance. Therefore, COMT may contribute to the genetic risk for schizophrenia not through the Val108/158Met polymorphism, but through other variants that are situated 3' to this region, in the Taiwanese population. Nevertheless, the true associated functional variants in our subjects remain to be elucidated.
