Clinical management of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) withdrawal delirium with CIWA-Ar protocol.
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a synthetic drug used mainly for recreational purpose. Although the prevalence of GHB abuse is low in Taiwan, GHB has become increasingly popular in certain subpopulations such as clubbers and men who have sex with men (MSM). GHB dependence could be associated with severe withdrawal syndrome including hallucinations and delirium. ⋯ Here we present a case of GHB withdrawal delirium that was treated successfully with fixed and symptom-triggered benzodiazepine dosing regimen based on Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol-Revised (CIWA-Ar) scale. The utilization of CIWA-Ar in such cases could offer useful guidance for benzodiazepine dosing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of GHB withdrawal delirium in Taiwan.

Patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells for models of cancer and cancer stem cell research.
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are embryonic stem cell-like cells reprogrammed from somatic cells by four transcription factors, OCT4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC. iPSCs derived from cancer cells (cancer-iPSCs) could be a novel strategy for studying cancer. During cancer cell reprogramming, the epigenetic status of the cancer cell may be altered, such that it acquires stemness and pluripotency. The cellular behavior of the reprogrammed cells exhibits dynamic changes during the different stages of reprogramming. ⋯ Some of the molecular mechanisms associated with cancer progression could be elucidated using the cancer-iPSC model. Furthermore, cancer-iPSCs could be expanded in culture system or bioreactors, and serve as cell sources for research, and as personal disease models for therapy and drug screening. This article introduces cancer studies that used the cell reprogramming strategy.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence and the morphologic characteristics of the radicular groove and root canal system in human mandibular second premolars with C-shaped root in a Taiwan Chinese subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging. ⋯ There was a 2-3% morphologic variation of the mandibular second premolar with a C-shaped root canal system among the Taiwan Chinese subpopulation investigated in this study. Detailed knowledge of the morphological characteristics of teeth may be valuable when choosing clinical treatments.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis involving the thyroid: A rare cytologic finding in otherwise healthy patients and review of literature.
The thyroid gland is an uncommon site for the presence of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). We report the cases of four Taiwanese women with hematopoietic elements on the smears of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) samples and compare the findings with those of previously reported cases. ⋯ Four patients were noted to have bone marrow elements on the smears among 63,361 thyroid FNA samples. These four Taiwanese women presented with nodular goiter and foci of hematopoietic elements by thyroid FNA without any chronic disease of hematopoietic tissue or any evidence of a thyroid malignancy.

Cancer risks of residents living north to the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Complex has not been studied before. ⋯ We conclude that all-cause cancer risk was significantly increased for Taisi residents living near the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Complex for 10-16 years after the complex began operating.
