Orexin-A levels are reportedly increased in antipsychotic (APD)-treated patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls and have been associated with metabolic abnormalities. It is not clear whether the orexin-A elevation is related specifically to the drug (APDs) effect, which should be clarified by including a drug-free group for comparison, or related to drug-induced metabolic abnormalities. ⋯ With the inclusion of drug-free patients rather than healthy controls for comparison, we demonstrated that orexin-A is upregulated following APD treatment even after we controlled the potential effect from MS, suggesting an independent effect of APDs on orexin-A levels. Furthermore, the effect differed between APDs with dissimilar obesogenicity, i.e. less obesogenicity likely associated with higher orexin-A levels. Future prospective studies exploring the causal relationship between APDs treatment and orexin-A elevation as well as the underlying mechanisms are warranted.

Epstein-Barr virus-related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome. Although etoposide-based immunochemotherapy has improved survival rates, consensus regarding the appropriate salvage therapy for patients with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH is lacking. We performed a retrospective study to examine the efficacy of a lymphoma-based treatment regimen for children with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH. ⋯ Four patients (67%) were disease free for a median of 10 years without undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. No grade 3 or 4 nonhematologic adverse events occurred. Lymphoma-based chemotherapy is a potential curative treatment for some subgroups of children with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH.

Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) is a reliable treatment for teeth with non-healing apical periodontitis. This study evaluated the outcome of EMS with mineral trioxide aggregate as the retrograde filling material and identified potential prognostic factors associated with the EMS outcome. ⋯ The EMS outcome is significantly affected by the tooth type and endo-perio communicating defect. The presence of endo-perio communicating defects has a greater negative influence on the success rate for premolars than for anteriors and molars.

Multicellular spheroid cultures have attracted increasing attention in the field of periodontal regeneration. However, very few studies have reported the periodontal ligament (PDL) cell spheroid formation via biomaterials-induced processes. This study investigated the biological characteristics of human PDL cell spheroids formed on two hydrophilic polymer-based biomaterials, namely chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol. ⋯ The biomaterial-induced formation of PDL cell spheroids suggests a novel strategy for cell delivery in research and clinical applications of periodontal regeneration.
