This retrospective cohort study enrolled 385 patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma from 1980 to 2021 in National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between thickness of primary melanoma lesions and disease outcome of melanoma patients, in particular, those diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM). The association between important clinicopathological characteristics other than tumor thickness and disease outcome was also analyzed. ⋯ Between patients with primary ALM lesions 4.1 millimeters (mm) to 8.0 mm thick and those with lesions over 8.0 mm thick, significant differences in prognostic outcomes including incidence of second recurrences within 1 year (raw p = 0.003, Bonferroni corrected p = 0.009) and distant metastases within 1 year (raw p = 0.003, Bonferroni corrected p = 0.008), were observed. Significantly worse 1-year (raw p = 0.01, Bonferroni corrected p=0.03) and 2-year survival (raw p = 0.006, Bonferroni corrected p = 0.02) were found in ALM patients with lesions of over 8 mm thick than those with lesions 4.1 mm to 8.0 mm at diagnosis. Vigilant short-term follow-up is warranted in ALM patients with lesions of over 8.0 mm thick at diagnosis due to higher risks of adverse outcome.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a relatively rare type of urothelial carcinoma. Additionally, only few reports have examined the sex differences in patients with UTUC. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the sex factors affecting renal function in patients with UTUC who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). ⋯ The female sex is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of advanced CKD stage, and dialysis among patients with UTUC who underwent RNU in our institute. Sex differences in renal function needs to be considered when evaluating survival.

Multicellular spheroid cultures have attracted increasing attention in the field of periodontal regeneration. However, very few studies have reported the periodontal ligament (PDL) cell spheroid formation via biomaterials-induced processes. This study investigated the biological characteristics of human PDL cell spheroids formed on two hydrophilic polymer-based biomaterials, namely chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol. ⋯ The biomaterial-induced formation of PDL cell spheroids suggests a novel strategy for cell delivery in research and clinical applications of periodontal regeneration.

Substance use during adolescence might cause substantial health burden. Little is known regarding profiles of multiple illicit substance users compared to single illicit substance users in adolescent population in Taiwan. ⋯ Our findings highlight the distinct profiles of multiple illicit drug users compared to single illicit drug users among adolescent population. High suicidality and high psychiatric comorbidities in multiple illicit drug users call for special need for suicide screening and a more integrated care incorporating psychiatric and substance treatment.

In Taiwan, 14,308 locally acquired COVID-19 cases among customers and employees in Sexy Tea shops were the first cases from May 9-August 28, 2021 (weeks 19-34). Nine weeks after the community spread of COVID-19 began, the proportion of people living with HIV (PLHIV) among the COVID-19 patients peaked at 35.7%, affecting 192 HIV patients, while the prevalence of HIV infection was 0.15%. In addition to a nationwide Level 3 epidemic alert, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) launched four strategies to contain this outbreak among PLHIV in this prevaccine era, including improving the quality of contact tracing, delivering health information via peer navigators, expanding SARS-CoV-2 screening and encouraging vaccination, and addressing hesitancy. The outbreak of COVID-19 related to Alpha strain among PLHIV in 2021 ceased four weeks after peaking and lasted eight weeks.
