The long-term disease course and efficacy of maintenance therapies have rarely been investigated in Asian patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). ⋯ Limited form disease and older age at disease onset are associated with a lower relapse rate in NMOSD. Compared to no maintenance therapy, rituximab and immunosuppressant significantly reduce the relapse risks.

Risk factors of lymphatic and hematogenous metastasis in cutaneous melanoma remained unclear in Asian population. This study aimed to identify clinical and histopathological factors to predict metastatic pathways in cutaneous melanoma in Taiwan. ⋯ Risk factors of metastasis not only differ between lymphatic and hematogenous pathways, but also differ between ethnics and melanoma subtypes. Better understanding the behavior of cutaneous melanoma may help guide further treatments and follow-up plans.

GP.Mur is a clinically important red blood cell (RBC) type. GP.Mur and band 3 interact on the RBCs. We previously observed that healthy adults with GP.Mur type present slightly higher blood pressure (BP). Because band 3 and Hb comodulate nitric oxide (NO)-dependent vasodilation and hemoglobin (Hb) is positively associated with BP, we aimed to test whether these could contribute to higher BP in GP.Mur+ people. ⋯ GP.Mur contributed to BP in both Hb-dependent and Hb-independent fashion. A pronounced impact of hemoglobin on BP likely requires sufficient Hb, as GP.Mur increased the sensitivity of SBP to Hb only in non-anemic Taiwanese men, and not in Taiwanese women or anemic men. The mechanism through which GP.Mur affected BP independent of Hb is unknown.

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) leads to a significant cause of hospital-acquired morbidity and mortality. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is effective to treat recurrent or refractory CDI (rCDI). However, the change of microbial composition contributed by FMT and its association with treatment outcomes is not well determined in Taiwan. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of FMT and the association with microbial alteration endemically. ⋯ Gut dysbiosis commonly co-exists in patients with rCDI. Restoration of gut microbial communities by FMT provides a promising strategy to treat antibiotic-failed CDI, and the extent of microbial change would be related to the treatment outcomes of FMT. Besides, the effectiveness of FMT for CDI could be maintained even the gut microbiota has diverged over time.

The effectiveness and safety of vedolizumab induction for moderate to severe ulcerative colitis for Asia patient: A real practice observational study.
The use of biologic agents has become the cornerstone of therapy for moderate to severe IBD. Few studies have investigated the efficacy of vedolizumab (VDZ) induction for ulcerative colitis (UC) in Asian patients in a real practice setting. ⋯ In real-world experience, induction therapy with VDZ showed promising clinical benefits and safety profile for patients with UC.
