The first autochthonous case and the first outbreak of chikungunya in Taiwan occurred during July-October 2019, with a total of 21 cases confirmed. Genetic analysis revealed the strains belonged to East/Central/South African genotype and had 99.95%-100% identity with the strains from the imported cases from Myanmar in 2019. This event confirmed that the imported chikungunya cases has the potential to cause autochthonous transmission in Taiwan; intensified surveillance and vector control measures are essential to contain the outbreak.

To describe the prognostic factors and survival outcomes in patients who underwent orbital exenteration surgery at a tertiary center over a 20-year period. ⋯ We found worse prognosis with positive lymphovascular invasion. Although not significant, malignant melanoma showed poorer survival times compared to sebaceous gland carcinoma. Close follow-up, especially in the first 2 years after orbital exenteration, is crucial to identify disease recurrence.

Periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus (DM) are both chronic inflammatory and highly prevalent diseases. A large amount of evidence suggested that the accumulation of oxidative stress plays a significant role in the deterioration of both diseases. Magnolol has been known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities in various tissues, but its effects on gingival cells under diabetic conditions have not been fully understood. ⋯ These findings showed that excessive AGEs in the gingiva may lead to the accumulation of ROS and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Supplement of Magnolol may be beneficial to improve the impaired wound healing and inflammation by upregulation of Nrf2 signaling for DM patients with periodontal disease.

Toxocariasis is a zoonosis disease with high sero-prevalence in Southeast Asian. Neurotoxocariasis has never been reported in Taiwan. Herein, we presented 2 cases of neurotoxocariasis. ⋯ Neurotoxocariasis presented a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms and the CSF profile can be non-eosinophilic pleocytosis. The prevalence of neurotoxocariasis may be seriously underestimated due to low awareness of physicians and lack of standard conventional diagnostic test in Taiwan. The two cases of neurotoxocariasis firstly reported in Taiwan will raise physician's awareness in recognizing this curable disease particularly in managing patients with aseptic meningitis or meningoencephalitis of undetermined pathogen.
