Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) should be regarded as a high risk factor for myocardial infarction (MI). In addition to anti-hypertensive effect, calcium channel blockers (CCBs) were frequently used as anti-angina drugs in patients with MI. However, the association between CCBs and MI in RA remains unclear. We investigated whether CCBs could decrease incidence of myocardial infarction in patients with hypertension and RA. ⋯ Therapy of CCBs is associated with a lower risk of MI among hypertensive patients with RA. Hence, the prescription of CCBs may be a compelling indication of BP lowering in RA population.

Alveolar bone loss following peri-implantitis remains a clinical challenge. We aimed to design a novel bioactive dental implant to accommodate the large bone defect caused by removal of previously failed implant. ⋯ The novel porous structured Bio-ActiveITRI dental implants may have a great potential for the prosthetic reconstruction where bone support is compromised after removal of a previously failed implant.

Oral cancer patients who survive for more than 5 years are supposed to have a reduced local cancer recurrence rate and survive longer. This study evaluated whether oral cancer patients who survived for more than 5 years might have reduced rates of local cancer recurrence, development of the second or third primary oral cancer, or the late regional cervical lymph node metastasis. ⋯ Oral cancer patients who survive for more than 5 years may still have local cancer recurrence, the second or third primary oral cancer, or the late regional cervical lymph node metastasis but with a reduced rate.

The role of SLC9A3 in Taiwanese patients with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD).
Congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens (CBAVD) is a special entity in obstructive azoospermia. Mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene are involved in Taiwanese CBAVD but most heterozygous 5T variant. The solute carrier family 9 isoform 3 (SLC9A3) is the Na+/H+ exchanger, which interacts with CFTR and regulates the Ca2+ homeostasis. ⋯ Most of Taiwanese CBAVD have at least one variant of SLC9A3 deletion and CFTR IVS8-5T, which co-contribute to Taiwanese CBAVD. The report indicates SLC9A3 deficiency can reverse the pathological changes in the gastrointestinal tract of CF mice. Further research can explore the definite mechanism of SLC9A3 and its role interacting with CFTR in different organ systems, which can contribute to novel treatment for the patients with cystic fibrosis and CBAVD.

Comparison of clinical outcomes between tailored transvaginal mesh surgery and native tissue repair for pelvic organ prolapse.
The most suitable surgical technique for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) remains undetermined. The aim of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of the tailored transvaginal mesh (TVM) surgery and vaginal native tissue repair (NTR) surgery for POP. ⋯ In women with intact uterus, the TVM group has a lower recurrence rate of cystoceles than the NTR group. In addition, old age, especially more than 64 years old, is a risk factor for cystocele recurrence.
