Metabolic risk factors are associated with liver fibrosis. Whether or not metabolic risk factors affect the severity of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), chronic hepatitis C (CHC), or risk factors associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate this by transient elastography. ⋯ Elevated BMI was an independent risk factor associated with possible LC across the three different etiologies of CLD. As such, weight loss may be beneficial in these patients.

This study aimed to compare the outcomes of combined hepatic resection (HR) plus intraoperative radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transarterial embolization (TAE) for Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage B hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in case-controlled patient groups using the propensity score. ⋯ Combined HR plus RFA may provide survival advantage compared to TAE in patients with BCLC stage B HCC.

Approximately 27% of erosive oral lichen planus (EOLP) patients have serum anti-gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity. This study assessed whether serum GPCA or EOLP itself was a significant factor that caused hematinic deficiencies and anemia statuses in GPCA-positive or autoantibodies-negative EOLP patients (GPCA+/EOLP and Abs-/EOLP patients). ⋯ We conclude that serum GPCA is the major factor that causes vitamin B12 deficiency, macrocytosis and pernicious anemia in GPCA+/EOLP patients. Approximately 29-32% GPCA-positive EOLP patients have vitamin B12 deficiency or macrocytosis and about 23-25% vitamin B12 deficiency or macrocytosis EOLP patients have pernicious anemia. ELOP itself does play a significant role in causing anemia and hematinic deficiencies in Abs-/EOLP patients.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) has been regarded as a precancerous condition. Research examining the prevalence of OSF could be the first step in preventing or reducing malignant transformation. In this study, we probed a nationwide registered database to assess the prevalence, gender distribution, age, income, and urbanization status of OSF patients in Taiwan. ⋯ This large-scale government-centered survey demonstrates that the prevalence of OSF in Taiwan significantly increased from 1996 to 2013. The prevalence was higher among men than among women.

Extended bandwidth nonlinear frequency compression in Mandarin-speaking hearing-aid users.
The high frequency information of consonant messages is important for recognition of speech. Recently, the nonlinear frequency compression (NLFC) technique has been shown to improve the speech perception in patients with high frequency hearing loss. In Mandarin, seven consonants are located over 10-16 kHz. Extended-bandwidth (EB) NLFC may provide an additional benefit for recognition of Mandarin words. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of NLFC and EB-NLFC on Mandarin word recognition in patients with high frequency hearing loss. ⋯ Patients with high-frequency hearing loss may benefit more from using EB-NLFC for word and consonant recognition; however, the improvement was small under a noisy listening environment. The subjective questionnaires did not show significant benefit of EB-NLFC either.
