This study aims to discuss the relationship between complications and patient characteristics and lesion properties in the transthoracic fine needle aspiration biopsy (TTFNAB) procedures performed for lung lesions and the treatment applied in our clinic to eliminate these complications. ⋯ The chances of developing pneumothorax after TTFNAB depend on number of pleural transition, emphysematous lungs, and non-pleural lesions. However, it is considered that procedures such as manual air aspiration and autologous blood patch may reduce the need for chest tube following the development of pneumothorax.

Hopelessness is the most significant predictor of suicide among the clinical and nonclinical populations. The aim of this study is to examine the correlates and predictors of hopelessness among Nigerian adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). ⋯ Hopelessness among clinically stable Nigerian adults with SCD is significantly influenced by hemoglobin concentration and psychological variables (resilience and depression). These variables can serve as templates for the development of health promotion strategies (medical and psychological) aimed specifically at the amelioration of the severity of hopelessness within this population.

Epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland: A rare tumor with oncocytic changes.
Epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC), a very rarely seen, low-grade, malignant, salivary gland tumor is most commonly located in the parotid gland followed by the submandibular gland. It is more often observed in females and in the 6th decade of life. ⋯ Physical and radiological examinations (USG and MRI) should be performed to see for any recurrence in the operated area during the first year for every 2-3 months. This study presents the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of a 59-year-old female patient with low-grade, oncocytic variant of EMC located in the left parotid gland.

The importance of fluoride in preventing dental diseases cannot be overemphasized. The aim of this study was to determine the fluoride content of commercial bottled water, sachet water and carbonated soft drinks available in Southeastern-Nigeria at the same time, eliciting their dental and public health implications. ⋯ None of the drinks investigated contained level of fluoride up to standard admissible values suggesting sub-optimal intake. As the suitability of advice on fluoride use in preventing dental abnormalities depends on the individual's total fluoride intake from drinks and other sources, a further study is warranted to relate this total with the baseline decayed missing and filled teeth of the population.

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis are irreversible destructive diseases of periodontal and peri-implant tissues. This study aimed to determine the receptor expressions of peroxisome proliferative-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ, retinoid X receptor (RXR)-α, vitamin D receptor (VDR), and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 in diseased tissues around teeth and dental implants. ⋯ The results revealed that RXR-α and VDR levels were higher, while PPAR-γ and COX-2 levels were lower in the healthy group and periodontitis and peri-implantitis groups resulting in similar expressions in the tested parameters.
