Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized trauma patients. Ultrasonography (US) has replaced venography as the initial diagnostic tool for DVT. ⋯ Most cases of DVT developed in the first week of hospitalization. Combined thrombo-prophylaxis was more effective than single regimen at reducing rate of DVT in neurosurgical trauma patients. Routine Doppler ultrasound DVT surveillance should be part of the management protocol for neurosurgical trauma patients on admission to increase DVT detection and prevent possible fatal pulmonary embolism.

The Relationship between Choroidal Thickness and Liver Damage in Simple Auto-immune Hepatitis Patients.
There was no sufficient clinical evidence on the relationship between auto-immune hepatitis (AIH) and risk of eye illness, except 11 uveitis cases where related AIH is reported currently. ⋯ The improvement of ChT might reflect the remission of liver damage in simple AIH patients without ocular symptoms during oral prednisone treatment.

Serum urea levels are essential for the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD), as they are a measure of renal function. Salivary urea has been used as an alternative to serum urea in patients with CKD. ⋯ The variability in salivary urea levels in the early and late stages suggests the use of salivary urea in the late stages of CKD. It is suggested that salivary urea levels may be used as an alternative to serum to assess and monitor the progression of renal impairment along with other standard renal function markers.

His study aimed to evaluate the availability of common diagnostic tests and biochemical markers in predicting poor prognosis in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC). The primary outcome measure was to identify predictive prognostic factors. The secondary outcome measure was to compare predictive measures in patients who survived or did not survive in the follow-up period. ⋯ Pretreatment high DRR, high IG counts and IG%, and poor differentiation of the tumor might be used as independent predictors of poor prognosis and mortality in patients with PAC.

Patients complain differently about their experiences of post-operative pain. However, clinicians are often guided by their own viewpoints despite the highly subjective nature of pain resulting in suboptimal post-operative pain management. This impacts negatively on the quality of life of patients in the immediate post-operative period. Investigating patients' pain behavior in the pre-operative period may therefore help to predict the intensity of post-operative pain, thereby assisting in identifying patients who are at risk of greater pain after third molar surgery, and allocating extra resources for pain control. ⋯ Sensory-discriminative dimension and affective response to cold pressor test are significant predictors of peak post-operative pain after impacted mandibular third molar surgery.
