Several publications have presented pattern of maxillofacial surgical conditions based on data from hospital-based studies. The objective of this study is to present the spectrum of maxillofacial surgical conditions from the perspective of a community study. ⋯ The spectrum of maxillofacial surgery from community-based data was associated with higher percentage of facial cleft as compared to hospital-based study that is associated with higher traumatic injury cases. High level of poverty, ignorance, and poor access to maxillofacial service have been identified as shortcomings in the management of the diseases. There is a need for pragmatic move to improve facility, training, enlightenment, and more funding of outreach programs.

This study is aimed to assess the functional results of cases with lower extremity malignant and metastatic bone tumours that were treated with modular tumour resection prostheses. ⋯ Although endoprosthesis reconstruction had advantages of giving very good functional results in the early phases, it was found to cause mechanical complications, especially in patients with primary bone tumours during the mid and late phases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of digital models produced with the three-dimensional dental scanner, and to test the dimensional stability of alginate impressions for durations of immediately (T0), 1 day (T1), and 2 days (T2). ⋯ This study showed that measurements on negative digital models offer a high degree of validity when compared to measurements on positive digital models and plaster models; differences between the techniques are clinically acceptable. Direct scanning of the impressions is practicable method for orthodontists.

The Nigerian National Programme on Immunization aims at increasing the immunization coverage of children under 1 year of age. However, there is still a gap between the national immunization targets and the immunization coverage rates, and data are rarely disaggregated according to socioeconomic status. As a result, there is a dearth of information about the coverage of subgroups, especially at the local level. This study determined the socioeconomic differentials in immunization coverage for children under 5 years and under 1 year in Enugu urban, Southeast Nigeria. ⋯ Full immunization coverage for children aged < 1 year was lower than the national target of 95%. There are differences in immunization coverage rates between different wealth quartiles in the area with the least poor benefiting more than the poorest, thus creating equity problems. Health managers need such community-based information about the vaccination status of their target population to plan and implement interventions that aim to improve immunization coverage in these areas.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions mainly caused by drugs. Data on incubation period, hospital stay, and outcome for HIV-positive patients are sparse. Role of corticosteroids in their management is still controversial. ⋯ Antimicrobial drugs are common to cause SJS/TEN. Among HIV-reactive patients, male have more risk, incubation period is more and severity of reaction is less. Effectiveness of corticosteroids for treatment of SJS/TEN is inconclusive.
