The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score is used for the diagnosis of sepsis and involves clinical and laboratory parameters that may not be readily and/or timely available in most resource-poor settings. Procalcitonin (PCT) has its level changed in response to bacterial sepsis and its measurement costs only a fraction of the total cost of investigations required to calculate SOFA score. This study aims to determine the diagnostic usefulness of PCT in bacterial sepsis. ⋯ Serum PCT concentration was significantly higher in bacterial sepsis compared to bacterial infection without sepsis and healthy state. PCT concentration demonstrated positive correlation with SOFA score in bacterial sepsis and can be used as surrogate for sepsis screening/monitoring in resource-poor settings.

Oxidative stress is considered to have a significant role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as well as many other diseases. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the antioxidant system status at pre- and post-operative period in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) requiring operation. ⋯ The results provide fundamental data showing the lowered GPx activity and TBARS levels considered as sensitive oxidative biomarkers after the operation. It was assumed that antioxidant system parameters might show changes after the operation, and GPx is prominent for resistance to hypoxic conditions. Post-operative reduction of GPx and TBARS levels is significant for evaluating the antioxidant system alterations after the operation. However, further investigations follow long-term duration for post-operative monitoring to estimate how antioxidant system status changes to improve the treatment of the health condition.

Thyroid dysfunctions are among the most common endocrine disorders in society. An increase or decrease in thyroid hormone levels may present with neurological and/or psychiatric symptoms. In this study, we aimed both to determine the prevalence of this disorder in our region by determining the frequency of thyroid dysfunction in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder in our outpatient clinic and to raise awareness during the evaluation process of patients. ⋯ Obtained data have shown that thyroid dysfunctions can be encountered frequently in patients presenting with depressive complaints. It is thought that the evaluation of patients with depressive complaints in terms of thyroid dysfunction, and the treatment of the underlying thyroid dysfunction will contribute to the regression of psychiatric symptoms.

The assessment of the sleep status of older adults and its relationship to oral health can help determine their well-being and quality of life. In accordance with this purpose, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between oral health and sleep quality in community-dwelling older adults in an urban area. ⋯ This is the first epidemiologic study to examine the relationship between oral health status and sleep quality, in which many oral health indicators are evaluated together in Turkish community-dwelling older adults. OHIP-14-TR may be a useful tool to employ in sleep disorder clinics for older people.

Does ligamentotaxis reduce the risk of avascular necrosis of the talus after lateral subtalar dislocation.
Lateral subtalar dislocations are rare and severe injuries caused by high-energy trauma, and they require urgent treatment. We reported two cases of lateral subtalar dislocation, which were treated with different methods. ⋯ The final outcome was poor, with avascular necrosis of the talus. Our opinion is that ligamentotaxis of the ankle and subtalar joint with unilateral external fixation unloads the talus and reduces the possibility of the development of avascular necrosis of the talus.
